Sui ruderi dell’antica chiesa normanna, venne edificata neI 1776 questa chiesa, esattamente sullo scoglio da cui la leggenda vuole che S. Vito giovinetto si sia imbarcato alla volta di Roma, per affrontarvi il martirio e la morte. La riconoscenza dei mazaresi per il martire concittadino San Vito che preservava la sua città dai pericoli di fame, pestilenza, carestie, terremoti e anche dai pirati musulmani si concretizzò nella costruzione di questa chiesetta che nel corso dei secoli ha subito profonde modifiche. 🇬🇧 On the ruins of the ancient Norman church, this church was built in 1776, exactly on the rock from which legend has it that the young S. Vito embarked for Rome, to face martyrdom and death. The gratitude of the mazaresi for the martyr fellow citizen San Vito who preserved his city from the dangers of hunger, pestilence, famine, earthquakes and also from Muslim pirates materialized in the construction of this church which has undergone profound changes over the centuries.
