Macon County has several access points to the Appalachian Trail. The most convenient is at Winding Stair Gap west of Franklin on Highway 64. It is very near Standing Indian Campground. Although it is possible to do shorter section hikes on the AT, many prefer to undertake the herculean journey from Georgia to Maine. Your stay here will permit only a small sampling of this iconic hiking trail. Sections of the AT in Macon County require acute exertion and is not recommended for inexperienced hikers. There are sections of moderate terrain which may be accessible for beginners. Please seek advice before undertaking your AT adventure.
