The Tuk-Tuk Thai Food truck parks at the Cooper (Community) Center on Wright Road, Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. You can call or text them to order, or just drive over, then, after ordering, hang out, while they prepare your food. You could sit at one of the picnic tables near the truck or take your order 'home' to the cottage. PLEASE NOTE: The google-map address, for the Cooper Community Center on Wright Road, places it in Mt. View and has the zip code as 96771; those are incorrect; the Cooper Center is in Volcano Village, and the zip code is 96785. The google-map points to the correct location and includes the correct physical address number on Wright Road, however.

Located in the renovated, historic Volcano House Hotel, The Rim Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, daily. The panoramic window-wall offers large views of Kilauea caldera and sunsets. (The best view of the summit eruption's underground lava lake is still from Jaggar Museum, though.) This restaurant is about a twelve-minute drive from the cottage, and, depending on the time of day, you would have to purchase a Park pass or show your receipt for a pass already purchased, to gain entry into HVNP.

Parks & Nature

HVNP is big, like this island, at 505 square miles/1308 square kilometer in area, and is what almost all of our guests come to explore. The entrance station is only a 7- or 8-minute drive from the cottage. There are miles/kilometers of hiking trails, and it is also one of the most accessible National Parks, for visitors who use walkers or wheelchairs. The Park never closes, so, visitors can drive up, after dark, to see the summit eruption's underground lava lake, which sometimes rises up within view, from Jaggar Museum. It is easy to drive back to the village for lunch, from the summit area. Go to http://www.nps.gov/havo and http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov for more information about the Park.

Niaulani, the name of this property, which is on eight acres of old-growth upland rain forest. Behind the two buildings, which have a long narrow parking area off of Old Volcano Road, there is a sculpture garden and the entrance to the 0.7-mile/1.1-km loop trail going through the forest. Our cottages each have a booklet that provides the names and illustrations of the plants and describes them, or you could download the information from this Web page http://volcanoartcenter.org/rain-forest/activities/ and read about Rain Forest tours on this Web page http://volcanoartcenter.org/rain-forest/ .

Kilauea volcano's summit eruption, a lava lake below the floor of Halema'uma'u pit crater, on the floor of Kilauea's caldera, is very interesting and can be view from outside the museum, so, at any time of the day or night, since Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park never closes. The Museum is only a 12- to 15-minute drive from our cottages and is open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, daily, and has fascinating displays and a book store. The lava lake inflates and deflates, frequently getting up to within view. These Web cams offer views of the lava lake. https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/multimedia_webcams.html

Getting Around

Visitors definitely need to rent/hire a car on this island. Hilo airport (ITO) is much closer to Volcano than is the Kona International Airport (KOA), and, at ITO, most of the rental-car companies are right across the road from the terminal (except for Enterprise, to which it is necessary to take a shuttle bus)
