During your visit you should go to Santa Teresa, the artistic neighborhood with beautiful old mansions up in the (cooler) hills. In Santa Teresa, my favorite spot is Parque das Ruinas: stunning views of Rio from an interesting unfinished building (which is also a cultural centre). Also good to have a coffee!

A cultural center built around the ruins of an old mansion (hence it's name), Parque das Ruinas offer great views of Sugar Loaf and hosts a number of events. Also check Chacara do Ceu, a small museum next door.
