A self-guided, 0.4-mile hike through dense tropical vegetation offers vistas of two magnificent waterfalls: Kahuna Falls; and the 442-feet Akaka Falls.
Akaka Falls Park is about 11 miles north of Hilo on the Hamakua Coast. You can actually see 2 waterfalls ! A short walk involved but well worth it with lush plants and trees. Nice views on the way up to and from the falls. (Fee I think is $5/car) Yes a beautiful drive !
Lovely, you’ll get a bit of exercise here, see if you recall what movie was shot here!
Nice drive to the falls along the Hamakua Coast. Trail is not rigorous but bring water. Plants and view of falls are spectacular.
This is one of the most amazing waterfalls you’ll see, without having to hike to it, on our island! It’s a bit of a drive at almost 2 hours, but getting there is part of the fun as you will drive through some of the most beautiful places you’ve ever seen! A drive up the Hamakua coast is must as you…
Akaka Falls State Park is a nice hike on paved trails, and a good, nearby activity no matter what the weather. Native ferns, large banyan trees.

“Volcanoes National Park is an otherworldly place, and is about a 90 mile scenic drive away. It’s beauty and rugged terrain both make this a very important place in Hawaii’s history. The Kilauea volcano eruption event of 2018 was massive and changed the landscape so drastically that Halema’uma’u crater collapsed and the Jagger museum has closed due to unstable ground. The visitor center within the park has a video that shows the destruction experienced during the last eruption and is worth watching. One of our favorite hikes to do in the park is the Kilauea Iki hike. It’s diverse and is good for pretty much all levels of hiking ability. There’s sweeping views of the crater on top, and you eventually descend into the crater itself and make your way back up. Absolutely a must do! The rangers at the visitor center are helpful and can guide you to other places of interest in the park. A drive down Chain Of Craters road is also a great way to see the park. Please note that there is currently no active lava visibly flowing in the park at this time. The weather can vary greatly on this part of the island, so plan ahead. If you come during winter, it will be much colder than it is in Kona. Visit the park’s website for more info.”

“About 45 minutes away ! Located about 4 miles north of Hilo. This is a must see if your into Botanical Gardens! Located on the ocean complete with waterfalls and just sheer tropical beauty. Unusual tropical plants, flowers, trees and well laid out walk paths thru-out and along the ocean. They even have golf carts available for assistance in bringing people back out of the gardens. Relaxing and nature intoxicating !”
