Food Scene

One of my favorites in Asheville. Italian cuisine with a deft, modern interpretation. Brian Canipelli is one of Asheville's top chefs. Insider's tip: eat at the bar and watch the wood-fired oven action. You can make an entire meal from their small plates. Wines are delicious, if a bit expensive. Great cocktails - Donnie Pratt is one of the best mixologists.

Iconic Asheville. This brewery started the beer revolution in Asheville. Funky, outside location. Live music when weather premits. Always an excellent food truck. In my opinion, best beer in Asheville. They have two locations. One at Wedge Studios and the other at The Foundry. Both are worth a stop. The Wedge at The Foundry is located in a revitalized industrial complex, with awesome graffiti. It is located next to Twelve Bones - BBQ.

Go here for some of the best BBQ in town. ONLY OPEN M - F 11 am - 4 pm. No nights or weekends. The food is really good, and the location is worth the trip. Located next to Wedge Brewing at The Foundry. This is as Asheville as Asheville gets.

Inexpensive, friendly, local. Insider's tip: it is a small place and can be very, very busy - they have a website where you can pre-order and pick up - order about 20 minutes before you want to eat, then just slip in and pick it up. 3 minute walk from the house.

OMG! Susannah Gebhardt (owner/chef) is one of the most talented culinarians in Asheville. Her pastries make memories. If you are REALLY into the best of the best, a stop here is a must. On Thursday, Friday, Saturday they have extended evening hours and live music.

A food truck that defines "killer sandwiches". Often at The Wedge Brewing company. Actually, one of the best sandwiches in town.

The Admiral redefined "fine dining" around 2008 or so. Introduced "funk" to the scene. The helm of the kitchen has changed hands many times, but seems, right now, it has hit a stride. This is another great place to sit at the bar. Reservations most nights (especially weekends) are a must. I think they have some late night stuff happening as well, like a bar scene and dancing, but you need to check that out.

A "flagship" of the Asheville food scene. If you are used to food and service you might find in NYC, Barcelona, or SF, then this is your spot. Top to bottom, "a class operation". I think it is better enjoyed with a group - 4 to 8 people, because you can order many plates to share. It gets pricey if only a couple. Sunday brunch is pretty rocking. Also have a sister operation - Nightbell - which is same high standards, easier to get into, and offers another version of a world class operation. They also just opened a bagel shop. Reservations at Curate are a MUST - and make them well in advance.

This is the "knock-off" of Patrick O'Cain's Gan Shan Station. Casual, take-out available. Limited, tasty, Asian menu. A short walk from the house. Clustered with OWL Bakery, Archetype Brewing. An order of wantons or wings and one other side is a sufficient meal. Totally a local place.

There are a number of locations. This one is a bit out of the way - but a very cool spot on the river. The Broadway location of Hi Five is always busy, their Rankin Avenue location if you are downtown is a good spot, but otherwise difficult to get to.

An amazing location on the river. A menu based wood-fired cooking. Michelle Bailey an unsung hero of the kitchen. Go here is good weather to hang out. Usually is busy in the early part of the evening. There is a lot of infrastructure improvements going on, won't stop you from getting there, but the riverfront has yet to be "busy after dark".

World class. Want chocolate? Unless you go to...actually...you can't go anywhere to get better chocolate. Well maybe Angelia's, 226 rue de Rivoli, Pais. BUT I don't think they are a bean-to-bar operation. Jael and Dan Rattigan are the creme d'la creme of chocolate, ice cream and pastries. Just opened a new factory along the river - taste and tour.. DON'T MISS FBC IF YOU WANT CHOCOLATE.

Drinks & Nightlife

One of the places that started the "cocktail revival". Want energy, young Asheville, great cocktails, cool downtown location. I can't name any favorite cocktails, because every time I went Cynthia Turner (the original cocktail Queen) always made me a special mix. She has moved on, but quality is still right up there. Warning: Two's The Limit.

Arts & Culture

I am listing the Skatepark as the destination because Airbnb does not recognize the location otherwise. This group of (under renovation) buildings used to be the location of the old tannery (New Belgium brewing is the location of the old stockyards). It is funky, amazing, and has Asheville's best collection of graffiti. The graffiti alone is worth the visit - I call this spot Asheville's (the South's?) best outdoor museum & it is free. Also located here is 12 Bones BBQ, Wedge Brewing at The Foundation, Summit Coffee house and the railroad tracks - What More Do You Want? This is an historical spot - what is used to be, what it is becoming.

John Cram is one of the founder's of today's Asheville. The Curve Studios - Pattiy Torno put this spot together years ago - now in the middle of the River Arts District revival (15 years in the making, or more). Sightseeing

Yes, it IS a tourist attraction, and yes, it is pricey, and yes, it takes a day or two to visit. BUT - after 40 years living in Asheville, I still have a seasonal pass. If you are only here for a day or two - you don't have time for this. Add an extra day - the gardens are amazing, the art collection is as fine as any, anywhere. And George Vanderbilt and his family have shaped our region, to understand a part of who is Asheville....visit.
