Interested in "biking" in the Adirondacks along some now retired railroad tracks? Check out https://www.revrail.com. We haven't tried this ourselves yet, but it looks like tons of fun and it is on our "To Do" list !! Here is an excerpt from their webpage: Railbiking with Revolution Rail Co. is a fun excursion activity that allows riders to ride the railroad tracks under their own power and explore a section of the Adirondacks that has never seen passenger traffic. Once railbikers check in at the historic North Creek Railroad Station, they’ll take a short shuttle ride 5 miles north of town to the tour launch point. After a short safety briefing, the tour guides will lead the railbikers further north on a 6 mile round trip cruise. The tour takes riders through the beautiful Adirondack forest canopy along the banks of the Hudson River, and then over the Hudson on a spectacular trestle bridge before turning for home and returning to the launch point and the shuttle bus ride back to the North Creek Railroad Station. Each tour takes about 2 hours from start to finish and you will cover about 6 miles on an out-and-back course. They run four trips daily: 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 4:30 pm

Located in Hadley, about 45 minutes northeast of Island View, their focus is guided rafting trips and tours on the Sacandaga River. You can also rent a kayak, canoe, or standup (SUP) board from them as well. We have gone whitewater rafting with them a number of times (typically in the Spring) and it has always been lots of fun! With one short bus ride to the put-in, you’ll be sweeping down the river in no time, returning to your vehicle without the aggravation of an additional bus trip. Parks & Nature

If you want to venture out to see and experience more of the natural beauty in the southern Adirondacks and the surrounding area, here are a number of places to consider:
See the only active spouting geysers east of the Mississippi River. Two of the most visited springs are: * Geyser Island Spouter - along Geyser Creek - which sends a narrow plume of water 10 to 15 feet (3 to 5 m) into the air, deposits minerals that grow a "tufa" deposit at the rate of two inches (5 cm) per year * Orenda Spring - also along Geyser Creek - has created a massive "tufa" dome, which continues to fossilize leaves and other debris as it grows

On top of Hadley Mountain stands one of the few restored fire towers in the Adirondacks, offering a commanding view of the Great Sacandaga Lake as well as the High Peaks on a clear day. The summit succumbed to forest fires back in the early 1900s and, as a result, still has a large bald, open rocky area at the top. Besides the fire tower, you can also see a ranger’s cabin, which is now occupied during the summer by a guide who greets climbers at the top instead of watching for fires as once was an important job. Round trip, this hike covers a little over 3 miles, with some steep sections but still suitable for a family trek. If you want an easy to medium difficulty hike to see a beautiful "bird's eye view" of the southern Adirondacks, you may want to consider hiking to the Fire Tower at the apex of the Kane Mountain Trail. The 360 degree view from the top of the tower overlooks Canada Lake in one direction and Pine Lake in the other. We hiked it for the first time with friends this fall (October 2021). We had a great time along the way, we were treated to gorgeous views of the fall foliage, and we look forward to going back again soon. The trails had some muddy areas, but other than 1 pretty muddy boot along the North trail on the way back, we didn't have any trouble navigating around the wet spots. Kane Mountain Trail is a 1.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located next to Green Lake - a short distance Northwest of Caroga Lake in Caroga, New York. It is rated as moderate and primarily used for hiking and trail running. Note that you can also make it a loop trail by taking the "North Trail" in one direction which is what we did on our way back down from the fire tower. Essentials

Grocery stores, milk, ice cream, gas, etc.
The many Stewart's locations in the area may look like just another chain of gas station / convenience stores, but, in fact, it is also a great place to find a wide selection of WONDERFUL locally made ice cream flavors as well! Stewart's is based in Saratoga Springs and their roots in the dairy industry date back to 1921. Today, they work closely with over 30 local dairy farms, to provide fresh milk that goes from cow to shelf in just 48 hours. They also use that milk to make dozens of delicious ice cream flavors and dairy products including buttermilk, eggnog, and half & half. They also source their eggs locally from Thomas’ Poultry Farm in Schuylerville. The Stewart's on 2nd Avenue in Broadalbin is probably the most convenient place to stop in for those small last-minute purchases like a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread, or a quick gallon of milk. If you stay at Island View during the winter holiday season (from Thanksgiving, through to Christmas and New Year's), we highly recommend their Stewart's brand of Egg Nog! If you are an Egg Nog fan, you won't be disappointed!

Opened in 1907 by R. G. DeWitt the Northville Five and Dime Store is the oldest 5 and 10 in the U. S. still operating today. It has been located in the current building since 1914 - the date emblazoned in the front building facade above the second story. The building has been a Five and Dime store ever since. Today it still has the original hardwood floors which have inlaid stars and old coins embedded in the floor near the front door. You can also view the original embossed tin ceilings and stained glass windows. Alberta Blowers who has been an employee for 53 years still works behind the counter today. Famous for 15 varieties of homemade fudge made on the premises. They have over 250 kinds of old penny and novelty candy, new and vintage toys of days gone by. With the Northville 5 and Dime being the oldest survivor in the United States of what has become a way of life in shopping at Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar Store, etc., it is a wonderful and fun place to educate children on how all these stores started and where it all began.

If you are looking for some Sacandaga and/or Adirondack decor, the Adirondack Country Store is worth a look. The store - located in a house - is a bit cramped and you won't find many bargains here, but it is a good place to shop if you are looking for that special something.
