Swakopmund

Swakopmund is commonly referred to as the “gateway to Africa for beginners”. Swakopmund is a small and very safe town situated on the south western coast of Africa and was established in 1892 by the German colonialists. Swakopmund is an interesting blend of European capitalist values mixed in with traditional African communalist values, and as such presents a totally unique experience for the world traveler. The fact that Swakopmund is situated between the dunes of the oldest desert, the Namib and the violent waves of the Atlantic ocean along the skeleton coast of Africa makes this little town most certainly the most surreal and special in Namibia, and probably one of the most interesting in the world. Because of its unique setting and coupled with the adventurous spirit of the inhabitants, Swakopmund has become famous as the adventure centre of Africa. Activities offered to travelers include skydiving, quad biking in the dunes, sand boarding, scenic flights, shark fishing, dolphin cruising and many different day tours. The architecture and infrastructure beautifully represents the different historical era’s namely German colonial, South African apartheid colonial and then the post independence African restructuring. Modern world high end facilities are to be found next to typical traditional communalist shanty towns with its lively and colorful traditional street markets. Swakopmund’s seaside promenades with its old German “Gemütlichkeit” appreciation of comfort and hospitality intermingled with its genuine African traditional roots such as the world famous Himba tribesmen and women makes the town truly multidimensional.

Probably the most incredible aspect of Swakopmund is its Namib Desert. The desert consists of the rocky desert and the sand dunes. It is a unforgettable experience every time you go for an endless walk in the dunes or in places like the moon landscape. Feel the incredible sense of freedom that you experience while sitting on a dune and watching the sun sets towards Brazil, or watching the full moon rise over Africa while knowing that the first humans on earth that lived in this cradle of mankind watched the same moon in wonder. Possibly the most esoteric of all experiences is to spend time in the dunes on a new moon night and become part of the Milky way in all its glory and splendor. The dune field starts about 200 meters from the Alternative Space and best of all is that it completely free. Tradition has it that the visitor must write a letter to somebody that is most dear to them while sitting on the dunes and include a bit of sand in the envelope (for luck and love)

Sandboarding with Alter Action will increase your adrenaline and heart rate While you cannot expect the same speeds as you would on the mountain, you cannot beat the experience of carving a dune face. The lie-down option which is a bit like tobogganing requires much less experience than stand up boarding which is like snowboarding. Speeds of about 80km/h can be reached down a 120m mountain of sand, which finishes with a big jump at the end.

Swakopmund is situated along the stretch of coast line generally referred to as the Skeleton coast. The indigenous San people called the region "The Land God Made with Anger”. The white sands of the deserted beaches north and south of Swakopmund stretch for endless kilometers, normally without a soul in sight, other than the odd jackal and the many sea birds. It is still a place not civilized by man , but like it was created originally. Only a small section was developed with a lovely promenade flanked by palm trees, coffee shops and restaurants. Swimming in the sea is refreshingly cold, and the older locals swear by its healing powers. The dense fog that often covers the town at night adds to the magic atmosphere. Spending hours walking along the beaches, and resting by soaking your feet in the rock pools while watching the little fish dancing of joy for life, is a truly spiritual experience.

Every morning, we pack our kayaks and join our seals and dolphins for a paddle at the tip of the remote Pelican Point peninsula. On the 4x4 drive to our Kayaking site, we get to see the Walvis Bay wetlands with plenty of birds including flamingos and pelicans, and the salt mine which is one of the biggest in the world. Our seals are very playful and love to interact with our kayaks. The seals come up to us to play with our paddles and to splash water at us. On a kayak, you become part of the ocean without disturbing the wildlife. The animals do not see us as a threat in any way, and therefore we have to opportunity to enjoy them 100% in their natural state.

Sandwich Harbour, a little less than 60km south of Walvis Bay in the Namib-Naukluft National Park, is one of Namibia’s most unique and dramatic sites. Here some of the world’s highest dunes descent into the cold Atlantic Ocean to form a picturesque lagoon. Once a commercial fishing and trading port, Sandwich Harbour is now a RAMSAR site (Site no. 743) with magnificent wetland wilderness and devoid of any human settlement. Wedged between the sea and the Namib Dunes, this is one of Namibia's most important coastal wetlands, and is home to eight endangered species among the large numbers of wading birds. Early evidence of human life is preserved, and the site includes several archaeological sites dating back thousands of years. In this extremely arid environment, early inhabitants were all hunter-gatherers who survived near fresh water and from hunting various small animals and collecting fruits, bulbs and melons including the famous !nara melon. Closer to the ocean, onwards from about 2,000 years ago, archeological sites contain mussel and marine shells indicating that seafood became an important element of substance for early coastal dwellers. There is further evidence that seals, sea birds and even the odd whale -dead and washed on-shore – added diversity to hunter-gatherer diet. For the last 1,000 years inhabitants of this unique area are pastoralists.

Several different flights are available options. However, the Sossosvlei excursion is a favorite. From Swakopmund your flight will take you to the stunning Kuiseb River Canyon, along and into the dune belt, past Tsondab Vlei. The next point of interest will be Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei, where we make a comfortable shallow turn around the area for a view of the pans amongst the 1000 ft tall sand dunes. The next leg over the “Sea of Dunes” takes us past the long-deserted Charlottenfelder diamond camps and on to the coast. We head back up past the Eduard Bohlen and Shawnee Shipwrecks, over the famous Sandwich Harbor wetland. We fly over the vividly colored salt pans south of Walvis Bay, past the harbor, before returning to Swakopmund.

Elephant Human Relations Aid in Namibia, Africa is an NGO that conserves desert adapted elephants, through an award-winning wildlife volunteer project. Elephant-Human Relations Aid (EHRA) Namibia has helped build peaceful relationships between free-roaming desert elephants and local communities in Namibia, Africa since 2003. Conflict exists due to shared land, resources and an ongoing drought in the region, which leaves communities and animals without much food or water. Elephants, livestock and humans are sharing the same waterpoints, which not only sparks conflict, but also results in human and elephant fatalities. EHRA’s mission is to implement practical solutions that help combat elephant-human conflict, and thereby secure a future for Namibia’s desert elephants. We do this through building protective walls around waterpoints, educating locals on conflict mitigation tactics and continuous monitoring of the different elephant herds. The desert elephant conservation Volunteer Project provides a valuable workforce for the construction of protection walls and also provides the necessary funding to build these walls. Also, the Volunteer Project provides funding for regular vehicle-based patrols of the area where the volunteer groups assist EHRA staff with monitoring the elephants and assessing the status of walls previously built. Volunteers can experience hands-on conservation and have a direct impact on fostering a peaceful relationship between elephants and humans, thereby securing their existence.

Sossus vlei is a world heritage site and consists of a picturesque dry pan and dead dry trees surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Petrified dunes are sand dunes that have solidified to rock and are found in several places in the Sossusvlei area. This area is characterized by high sand dunes of vivid pink-to-orange color, an indication of a high concentration of iron in the sand and consequent oxidation processes. The oldest dunes are those of a more intense reddish color. These dunes are among the highest in the world; many of them are above 200 metres.

Climate Surrounded by the Namib Desert on three sides and the cold Atlantic waters to the west, Swakopmund has a desert climate with mild conditions year round. The average temperature ranges between 15 to 25 °C or 59 to 77 °F. Rainfall is less than 20 millimetres or 0.8 inches per year, making gutters and drainpipes on buildings a rarity. The cold Benguela Current supplies moisture for the area in the form of fog that can reach as deep as 140 km inland. Fogs that originate offshore create a fog belt that frequently envelops parts of the Namib desert.
