Drinks & Nightlife

A cantina where you can find old men playing dominos by day and the art crowd making after-opening toasts by night. I recommend the soups -- everything on the food menu is wonderful, and it's perfect for late night dinners in the neighborhood.

This is the re-opening of a classic 1980s Mexico City queer club (all are welcome.) If you read Spanish, check out its history in Guillermo Osorno's book Tengo Que Morir Todas Las Noches, it is amazing chisme histórico. Come through beginning around 7pm for cocktails on the terrace. There are sometimes art shows, drag performances, and usually a DJ playing at night. If you see an older man in spectacles or a cardigan, say hi; it's the legendary owner Henri Donnadieu.

Yes, of course there are more authentic pulquerias in town, but none with four floors, live music, and author events in the early evening. Pulqueria Los Insurgentes is the perfect spot to try CDMX's famous fermented maguey drink (I recommend the flavored varieties for your first sips -- they have a rotating menu that includes flavors like peach/durazno, celery/apio, nut/nuez) that has played such a large role in the city's history.

The friendly neighborhood veggie buffet doubles as a meditation center (classes every day!), but I go to meditate while I eat. The lunch buffet (available from 1-4:30pm) is cheap (prices vary; it's usually around 80 pesos) and simple, with lots of veggie versions of Mexican classics like enfrijoladas, enchiladas, tortilla soup. Get a table by the fountain and go nuts.

Don't say I didn't warn you -- you'll see a LOT of US tourists here because the spot is owned by gringos. That being said, there's a reason why they come. Cicatriz has lovely pastries, coffee, and small plates for breakfast, lunch, and computer work time. In the early evening, it pivots to become a bar with a lovely wine menu, delicious mezcal cocktails, and fried chicken sandwiches. It closes around 11/12 and is not open on Tuesdays, check its schedule.

VEGAN TORTAS, TACOS, AND DESSERTS on the street! Sure to delight any cat lover with its punky, feline-loving decor -- I go for the torta with salchicha and chorizo. Expect a wait, the place is popular.

A phenomenal, queer-run independent bookstore with the most vast LGBTQ+ section I've ever seen! They hold readings by the café in the back of the shop if you want to check a local author's work.

Getting Around

This is a major travel hub in the city -- you can find a Metrobus to take you to Ciudad Universitaria, a Metro to get you downtown or nearly anywhere else you'd like to go! It's the Insurgentes Metrobus and the pink line of the Metro.

Parks & Nature

La Ciudadela, technically, is a big, gorgeous park where old people take salsa lessons on the weekends and a massive old cigar factory now serves as a public library housing a small photography museum (El Centro de la Imagen.) That being said, I'm including it on this list for the sky-high souvenir shopping potential at the Mercado de Artesanías La Cuidadela next door on Calle Balderas (just ask for the "mercado artesano" if you can't locate it, the pin is on the park here.) You do not need to go anywhere else to pick up traditional woven blankets, ceramics, toys, clothing, etc.

The fact that you can walk to Bosque Chapultepec from the house is a dream. The city's central park is home to world class museums (Museo de Antropologia, Museo Tamayo among them), many running trails, an underwater mural by Diego Rivera, and an actual castle on a hill that is now a national history museum.
