The architecture graveyard at Cal Poly. The Cal Poly Architecture Graveyard is a strange hodgepodge garden of experimental designs and it’s wickedly cool. 3 miles round trip - Every year, the Cal Poly Canyon Design Village competition asks participating students to pick a plot of empty land in the Graveyard and build a structure according to a theme and rules. And the group leaves the structures are left there to enjoy for years to come. During your next trip to San Luis Obispo County, set aside a couple of hours to hike to this special gem. But, if you haven’t been here before it’s kinda confusing to find. The graveyard is located next to the California Polytechnic State University. It’s Cal Poly Campus playground for architect students to build experimental structures and play with environmental design through an annual competition. For directions, head to the internet ;) Definitely visit The Arboretum at Cal Poly (go early, maybe you’ll see turkeys wondering campus). +Leaning pine Arboretum – a beautiful spot in SLO, covering 5 acres of land along the northern side. Great views of the campus and mountains. You can also go bowling at Cal Poly there is a pizza place next door and you can bring the pizza in while you bowl.

Sightseeing

You'll find a ship wreck, there along the coast west of Cayucos, just south of the Pacific Coast Highway, which runs east / west there as it hugs the coastline! It has been stripped of everything, including all electronics and engine parts. When the tide is low, it is extremely easy to walk out to the shipwreck and board her. I advise some caution, however, as holes are already forming on the ship's floor. To locate the shipwreck, exit Route 1 at Ocean Avenue, the most northern / western part of the road. Make an immediate right onto a dirt road located there that will take you a very short ways into a dirt parking lot, probably filled with surfers on the weekend. Follow the dirt path in front of you towards the ocean and you will eventually come to a small cliff that you will have to navigate down, in order to get to the beach and cove below. The shipwreck can be found there. I advise going at low tide, as during high tide you may not be able to get very close to the ship, and much of the cove that the ship sits in will be under water. From the right angle, when viewing the shipwreck, you can see the Morro Bay Rock behind it.

This famous 70-foot long gum-lined alley is one of the most talked-about (and grossest!) landmarks in San Luis Obispo. While some historians believe it started after WWII as a San Luis Obispo High School graduation event, others suspect that Cal Poly students started it in the late 1950s. Either way, Bubblegum Alley has been a San Luis Obispo staple for decades. Make your mark Downtown and stick your own gum to the wall; some people write notes, create art, or leave messages.

The Piedras Blancas Rookery is the only elephant seal rookery in the world that is easily accessible, free, and open to the public every day of the year. No reservations are needed. The rookery is located seven miles north of San Simeon on Highway 1. Elephant Seals are seen year-round at the Piedras Blancas Rookery. Best times of year to see these amazing animals in action are October through May with the big show (birthing and breeding) in January and February. Come see these magnificent marine mammals up close on one of the prettiest coastlines in California. You'll need to plug your nose, but these are incredible creatures to see!

Activities

The Bob Jones trail is a well-paved county-maintained bike and walking trail also known as the City to the Sea Trail. The trail starts across the street from the parking lot on Ontario Road, right off Highway 101, and ends in downtown Avila Beach. The trail is great for all levels of hiking and biking. It makes for an enjoyable, smooth and (mostly) flat ride with trail benches sprinkled throughout. Dogs are welcome on the trail but please pick up after them! The Bob Jones Trail wanders next to San Luis Obispo Creek, right behind the Avila Valley Barn fields. It passes the rear of Bellevue-Santa Fe Charter School. You can enjoy walking by the fields and depending on the time of year, you might just catch the the sounds of frogs and flowing water. Hard to believe it’s so close to the beach! From the trailhead parking lot to the end of the Avila Pier is 3.0 miles.

Montana de oro bluffs hike is so beautiful. It’s completely flat, you do have to keep an eye on them near the edges but it’s not too crazy. There are stairs down to a tide pool area where it’s fun to picnic when the tides low, there’s also a beautiful stony beach right before the trailhead. Jockos steakhouse in Nipomo. Can’t go wrong with their steaks, halibut, and crab legs. Great portions for the price. Basic but good Bloody Mary’s. As a matter of fact I’m going there tonight!!

An awesome breakfast and lunch! Cleaner eating too, for example, the waffle is made with House flax and wheat batter topped with granola, almond butter, market fruit and maple syrup.

We love this hidden gem of a restaurant located in the Cliffs hotel in Shell Beach. After dinner, head outside and you will see a walk way at the north end of the parking lot, or if you turn right as you leave through the back of the restaurant. It’s a great little walk down the steps to an almost private beach for some great tide pools, sunset views, and exploring.
