Our favorite places for Breakfast/ Brunch

1. Cafe Rico- excellent coffee and food in a fun setting with a large collection of books in English for barter or sale; try the Ana Rosa or the vegan version of the Ana Rosa called the Pacha Mama. 2. Bread & Chocolate- everything on the menu is great and portions are generous 3. Biriba- just beyond Puerto Viejo in Cocles; all vegan menu but you will love it if you're an omnivore too 4. Port Vell- another great breakfast spot 5. Como en Mi Casa- delicious all vegan food, open for breakfast & lunch 6. De Gustibus Bakery- great coffee & baked goods 7. Caribeans- coffee & chocolate are their speciality but we also highly recommend their muffins, smoothies and sandwiches 8. Ama Ser- great yoga classes and yummy, healthy vegan options in their cafe
Puerto Viejo is the nearest town and hosts a surprising number of excellent cafes, resturants, bakeries and shops.

Our favorite restaurants for Dinner

Their are many good places to eat dinner. Our favorite- expensive for this area but definitely worth the splurge- is La Pecora Nera in Playa Chiquita. You'll experience a creative and delicious multi-course Italian meal in a beautiful setting. Others that we recommend: Stashus Con Fusion (pan asian, great sunset view), Monli (seafood), Como En Mi Gloria (near Super Cocles, spanish), Koki Beach (on main street in PV, facing the ocean), La Layenda (great pizza), Lidia's (local fare), Grow Beachfront (excellent vegetarian & vegan menu, great drinks and mocktails, ocean/sunset view; note kitchen closes at 6 pm)

Don't Miss:

The Saturday Farmer's Market (Feria): fresh fruit & veggies at fantastic prices; vendors on the right have all organic produce. Just outside the market, Rios Vegan has a stall where they sell excellent vegan prepared foods. The Jaguar Rescue Center: make reservations in advance Cahuita National Park: easy walk through the jungle with lots of animals to see

Getting Around:

If you don't have a car, you can rent a bicycle (multiple places in town), rent a scooter, take a taxi or take a tuc-tuc (small red golf-cart type vehicles). If you plan to rent a car, especially a 4WD vehicle, do so in advance of your trip as the local rental companies (Adobe, Alamo) sometimes run out.

Shop for souvenirs before getting to the airport

Souvenirs are quite overpriced in the airport. You can get souvenirs, locally made chocolate, coffee and lots of other gifts in Puerto Viejo and the surrounding little towns. The prices are better and you are supporting local small businesses. If you're planning to shop for clothes, there are lots of upscale boutiques in PV- most notably Luna May and Samoa. Wanderlust has upscale souvenirs, books, t-shirts, jewelry and more. For less elegant fare, try the small shops in town, the open air stalls along the water, Reggaeland and, further down towards Punta Uva, Casa Mandala.
