You can’t visit West Auckland without heading to Piha! It’s just good for the soul. You could also do the Mercer Bay Loop before you get to Piha. It’s a stunning walk with amazing views. See more information in my guidebook. Walk around to The Gap/Blue pools, they can be reached at low tide by walking over the rocks at the south end of the beach, or even on very low tides along the sand. You could also check out the West Coast Art Gallery. Surfboards can be hired from Piha Surf. There are some food options while you’re out there too; Murray’s for a bite to eat, coffee and ice cream is in the carpark opposite the beach. Next door is Brothers Beer/Juke Joint at the Surf club or check out the RSA. The Piha cafe and dairy are opposite the campground. Or take the picnic blanket and pack a picnic! Piha has black sand which can get very hot, so take your footwear! Stay safe and always swim between the flags, Piha Beach can be dangerous with its strong currents, rips and waves.

You can swim here when the tide is in, but always check swimsafe for water quality first. If you're up to it, you can walk to French Bay from here, check goog maps. Enjoy a coastal walk linking to Miha Road and The Parade. Access from Otitori Bay Road. Toilets and changing rooms, car park, and seating are inside the park.

A peaceful bushwalk along the rugged coastline, with great views of the Manukau Harbour. The track is known as Te Ara o Tiriwa (The Pathway of Tiriwa – the legendary high priest of the Waitākeres). Start at the end of Portage Road and follow the steps down to Tauihu / Green Bay Beach. At low tide, children can hunt for crabs and sea anemone before starting on their walk. At the eastern side of the beach, there are steps leading to a coastal walkway along the edge of the Manukau Harbour. Follow the path to Taunton Terrace, and then around the coast to Āmio / Blockhouse Bay Beach Reserve. Paths are generally gravel with some boardwalks and stairs. There are some steep areas with steps - take care as these can be muddy in winter. The bushwalk sections are shaded, so a good option if you're keen to get out but avoid the direct sun. The path ends at Blockhouse Bay Beach - a great spot for picnics, paddling and bird watching. Kids will love the pirate ship themed playground and huge tunnel slide right next to the beach.

Waitakere Dam
The Waitakere Dam Tramline Track is an easy 6.5km walk taking around 2 hours to complete.
A scenic bush track in the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park, with great views over the Manukau Harbour and Lower Nihotupu Reservoir. The track starts alongside the Watercare reservoir. There is parking here, but this is a popular spot so car park can fill up quickly. The Exhibition Drive Track is compacted gravel and fairly flat. It's a former road so great for walking, running and cycling. Watch for the information posts along the way which explain some of the intriguing but often missed features of Exhibition Drive. Exhibition Drive was first a tramway for laying the pipeline that carried water from the Upper Nihotupu Dam to the city. It was widened to road width to provide access to the Waitākere Ranges. This opened up the area for recreation activities such as scenic drives, picnics and walking. At the turnaround point, there are great views over the Lower Nihotupu Reservoir and Manukau Harbour. If you want to keep exploring, continue on the Beveridge to Arataki Track to reach the Arataki Visitor Centre - the gateway to the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park. Takes about 25 minutes to walk to the entrance from the Studio.

This scenic bush track takes you from Exhibition Drive to the Arataki Visitor Centre, the gateway to the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park. From the track start, follow the Beveridge Track markers. The gravel track runs through beautiful native bush. It's mostly a gentle gradient, with a few steep sections where cyclists may need to dismount. It's a shared track – so remember to look out for walkers if you're riding. You'll pass the Monkey Drive Tunnel, which was built in 1901 to house a pipe that carried water from Upper Nihotupu Dam to a pump station in Western Springs. There are great views of the Manukau Harbour and Lower Nihotupu Dam. Don't miss the exhibitions and nature activities at the Arataki Visitor Centre. The pou (post) stands as a guardian to Arataki, and inside you will find whakairo (carvings). Relax on the back decks of the visitor centre and take in the incredible views. If you want to keep exploring the regional park, check out the short walk to the lookout or the Nature Trail. At the visitor centre, park rangers will help you make the most of your visit, including updates on the latest track and weather conditions and directions to the best places in the park. When combined, the Exhibition Track and Beveridge to Arataki Track offer a safe walking and family cycling route from Titirangi to the Arataki Visitor Centre.

Starting though some beautiful native bush before joining a gravel road, this easy stroll offers some great views. Following a stream through to the Dam itself there are a couple of epic waterfalls to stop by and marvel at. The historical Nihotupu Dam is very much worth the walk, standing at over 100ft tall and storing over 530 Million gallons of water it makes for a very impressive structure. A further 10 minute walk will take you to a picnic area where you can follow the old tramline to the base of the Nihotupu Dam. From here it is possible to return to the top of the dam via a series of stairs, these are steep! So be careful. Such a great walk for all the family. Location Follow Scenic Drive, Turn down Piha Rd towards Piha and the Nihotupu Dam Walk car park is on the left.
