Food Scene

A very popular bar, cafe and excellent restaurant, offering something a bit different than the usual Umbrian fare. It's all dreamed-up and cooked by the owner, Alessandra. Also a good spot to sit if you need a wifi connection in town - just ask for the password. http://caffemagi1.placeweb.site/?opentab=1

Sightseeing

The 11th-century Round Bell Tower is our favorite Citta di Castello site, because it is just so unique and beautiful (especially when lit up). For great views from the top (an easy climb if it is open), go to ask to go up at the Museo del Duomo (see separate listing). Among past uses, it has served as a prison. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campanile_rotondo_(Citt%C3%A0_di_Castello)

This tower is more important in the civic hierarchy of towers than the Campanile Cilindrico, but less special, in our view. You can climb to the top of this one too. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g580241-d10320734-r431880770-Torre_del_Vescovo-Citta_di_Castello_Province_of_Perugia_Umbria.html

This is another palace of the Città di Castello's Renaissance ruling family, the Vitellis (along with the town art gallery, or Pinacoteca). Arts & Culture

Città di Castello's beautiful and active 17th-century theatre, il Teatro degli Illunimati, is well worth a visit. It is located in the historic centre at Via dei Fucci, 14 - just one minute from the apartment. Even if you don't speak Italian, you might find a concert on here. For information, tel 0758522920 or 0758555901 or visit http://www.cdcnet.net/teatro_illuminati/

The works of Città di Castello's most famous son, artist and sculptor Alberto Burri, are mainly housed in this museum on the outskirts of town, in the ex Seccatoi del Tabacco (ie tobacco storage and drying warehouses). The municipal gallery (Pinacoteca) is located in the gorgeous Renaissance Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera. Be sure to get around the right side of the building to see the beautiful 'graffitied' exterior walls. Inside, enjoy the impressive dimensions of this noble house and the small but choice art collection, which includes works by Raphael and Signorelli. This was the home of the soldier-prince family that ran the town until Italy was unified in 1861. http://www.cittadicastelloturismo.it/it/percorsi/storia/palazzi/21-palazzo-vitelli-alla-cannoniera.html

Entertainment & Activities

Citta di Castello's very own hot sulphur springs, where you can enjoy the spa's thermal pools and wellness centre and book a range of relaxing or curative treatments. Or you can just go to hang out in the shady gardens or use the outdoor (non-thermal) pool (for a small fee).

Fattoria Caldese (Lerchi. Tel 075 8510197 http://www.fattoriacaldese.eu/it/home/) is the nearest thing to a Città di Castello country club. You can play golf or have riding lessons or excursions. It is just five minutes by car from town. Take the road from Citta di Castello towards Arezzo, drive through the village of Lerchi and then, in the next slightly built up area on the road, look out for a sign to the left to Fattoria Caldese. Take that turn and you can't miss it a short way along that road.

Getting Around

There is an Avis car rental office in Citta di Castello, but beware - they are pretty 'Italian' in their attitude to business. This means that they close for a good part of August - during the busiest tourist season! The office is a 5-10 minute walk from the flat, outside the old town.

Citta di Castello train station is to the north of the the historic centre on Via Ippolito Salviano, 10-15 minutes walk from the flat. The local line is managed by the Ferrovia Centrale Umbria and runs a rather limited service north as far as the town of Sansepolcro and south as far as Perugia. From Perugia Ponte San Giovanni, you can connect easily to many other places of interest, such as Assissi and Spoleto.
