Things to Do

About 45 minutes north-east of Cartagena bubbles an active volcano that you can swim in a bath of naturally heated mud. Locals insist that the therapeutic baths bring numerous health benefits, but at very least you’ll get a pore cleansing and some especially smooth skin. Know Before You Go Most visits require a tour guide or, at least, a knowledgeable taxi driver. A round trip with a local guide costs approximately $30, including price of entry. We have an English speaking guide (Jesus) we can recommend.

A little cafe and bookstore within the bustling, narrow streets of Cartagena’s Old Town. Step inside grab a cup of steaming Colombian coffee while browsing the walls of floor-to-ceiling books just waiting to be plucked from the shelves. Great place for a rainy day or to get away from the "tourist traps".

The convent’s history is as intriguing—and at times troubling—as its views are beautiful. The original structures were built in the early 1600s by Augustinian friars. On a hill overlooking the entire city of Cartagena, the white-washed, red-roofed complex offers stunning vistas stretching toward the Caribbean Sea. While towering over the city helped protect it over the centuries from pirate attacks and other invasions, the cloister was still damaged a number of times throughout the years with a lot of the convent’s historical records lost during these attacks. Nevertheless, a great place to visit. Know Before You Go It's best to take a cab to the convent, as the road leading to the top of the hill is long and steep. You can expect a cab fare of approximately 8-10,000 pesos each way.

Közlekedés

Taxis use is your best option for getting around Cartagena.

Immediately on the right when you exit the Customs area of the airport, you will find an automated "Taxi Fare Generator" (painted yellow and black). You can instead negotiate the fare directly with the driver if you want. You can expect to pay 22-25,000 pesos to the apartment. Throughout your stay, remember to negotiate your fare before getting into the cab as meters are non-existent. Also tipping your cab driver is not necessary unless he helped you with bags for example. While Uber is less of a player in Cartagena, a favorite local app is "Indriver".

FREE Sunsets

You can go to the "tourist trap" spots to watch the famous Cartagena Sunsets, (elbow to elbow with other tourists paying inflated drink prices) or walk from the apartment to the beach in front of the Hilton Hotel, sit on the rock retaining wall and take in the same beautiful sunset for free.
