Among the first things that you gaze upon while entering the port is the ancient monument of Portara on your left and the old castle of Chora on your right. Portara is the most well-known landmark of the island and justifiably so. It consists of a huge, centuries-old marble door standing on a small islet. When you see it for the first time, its elegance will leave you speechless. For the romantic souls, the best time to visit this site is during sunset when the sky turns into gold! Do not miss: Naxos castle walking tour and sunset at the Portara.

One of the most mountainous villages of Naxos but surely a special one, Apeiranthos is located almost 30 km away from Chora, roughly at the center of the island. The particular dialect of the people of Apeiranthos, alongside with their unique customs, suggest that probably Cretans inhabited the region during the 10th century. This small village is where Manolis Glezos, the hero of Greek resistance and politician originates from. Apeiranthos is definitely a must-visit destination during your trip to Naxos and offers numerous activities: from visiting picturesque museums of Natural History and Folk Arts or trying local delicacies in some of the traditional restaurants of the village, to hiking on the surrounding mountains!

The Tragea region is famous for its olive groves and little Byzantine churches and they are very much in evidence in the village of Filoti. Filoti is situated 18 km from the capital of Naxos, in a beautiful verdant valley near the mountain of Zas. The village is situated on quite a steep hill and the main street contains the main life in terms of cafe and restaurants. It is a traditional Cycladic village built amphitheatrically on the slopes of the mountain with whitewashed flat roofed houses and narrow flowered streets. Local people use this flat topped houses as balconies. Filoti has a superb little main paved square surrounded by picturesque cafes and taverns, shadowed by a huge and majestic plane tree. Churches are plenty and they are worth exploring if the doors are open. It's worth spending a day visiting these beautiful mountainous villages Filoti and Apiranthos.

Nowadays, Halki knows a different kind of development, with art galleries, boutique guesthouses, restaurants and coffee shops. Windsurfing is very likely the most popular water sport on Naxos, as the calm waters and low waves make a safe spot to try the sport. In fact, Laguna Beach Park on the west side of the island, where Naxos’s premier windsurfing school is located, claims the park is the safest spot in the entire world for learning to windsurf.

Guarding the North of the island, this ruined tower facing the sea was built in the 17th century by the noble family Kokkos. Largely destroyed by fire in 1992, the tower walls and battlements still remain. Great view & great feeling by this spot. Totally worth visiting.

Moutsouna is a small fishing village on the eastern coast of Naxos. It used to be the port of Apiranthos. It was once a busy export harbour when emery was in high demand. There the valuable cargo was transported and was loaded in boats so as to be transported to Athens or other islands. Today, you can see the cable car system and towers in place.

The village of Galini is built in a fertile valley a few km north of Chora. It has about 200 inhabitants which deal mostly with agriculture. Close to Galini, there is the monastery tower of Ypsilotera, as constructed by the Venetians in the early 17th century. The village has become quite famous and attracts a growing number of tourists due to its well known taverns that serve excellent quality produce such as local meat, fresh vegetables and good quality local wine. The prices are still quite inexpensive and the portions large enough to satiate even the very hungry.
