Situated amid the rocky arches of a crypt below The Botanist is Bath’s newest underground bar, styled as a medieval apothecary and offering more space than most. The Botanist has done a good job of sprucing up Bath’s Grade II* listed Octagon building and Beneath is a new venture for the national chain. The Octagon was once a chapel and, though the tendency at the time was to keep a morgue beneath, this chapel had a wine cellar instead. Today, you can choose from a cocktail list that favours botanicals and strong flavours. DJs play later on.

This popular Bath eatery has an impressive pedigree. Chef-patron Robert Clayton has overseen the operation since its inception in 2012, and he previously garnered a Michelin star at an impressively young age while he was head chef at Huntsrete House Hotel (now the Bath outpost of The Pig) and he was also the head chef of Bath Priory in the city itself. These days, Clayton can be found at this rustic-chic space, which features soft colour tones, exposed brick, and wooden tables and chairs.

Graze Bar, Brewery and Chophouse is situated in the Vaults development in Bath, next to Bath Spa Station. Graze takes the concept of its sister establishments in Bristol and Cirencester, fine ales, wines and spirits and a delicious selection of classic British and European dishes, and nudges it one step further with the addition of its own micro-brewery. The premises are part of a food quarter in and around the arches of the nineteenth-century railway station, originally built by none other than Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The menu has a strong focus on British meat cookery with a particular emphasis on dry aged steak cooked in a searingly hot Josper charcoal oven. In addition to the seriously meaty fare there is also a great selection of small plates, fish and shellfish dishes and vegetarian options, as well as seasonal specials.

This upmarket bar and live music venue is set in an old bakery, with a long marble-top bar, a stage surrounded by dining tables (the kitchen serves plates of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern crowd-pleasers) and a second room and bar for DJs. Smart leather banquettes sit beneath industrial piping and the cocktails are reasonable at £9. Expect to be serenaded by swing, jazz or Latin musicians before the tables are cleared away for dancing after 10pm. The vibe in the second room is younger, with disco, soul and R&B tunes.

The Dorset brewery’s eye-catching conversion of what used to be Bonham's auction rooms is a buzzy place for a drink. The dramatic, open-plan interior includes long wooden tables for drinking (and eating – but there are better places to dine in Bath) and a clubby-looking area with Chesterfield sofas, battered leather armchairs, shelves of board games and an indie soundtrack. Upstairs, there is a roof terrace open until 10pm. Among the 'Signature Serves' is the French Revolution - a refreshing and highly drinkable blend of vodka, black raspberry liqueur, pineapple juice and fresh raspberries.

Sat on the lower ground floor of this enigmatic shop-cum-bistro-cum-charcuterie is a champagne bar, in a raffish den of velvet sofas, 1970s coffee tables, multi-coloured lampshades and vintage posters. Alongside a list of champagne cocktails – which includes a Bath Sunrise involving creme de cassis – three champagnes are particularly recommended to accompany a range of cheesboards, fondues and baked camembert. Classic cocktails are available too.

Halfway up cobbled Queen Street is one of the city’s best-loved bars. On offer are some 200 gins, covering fruity, floral, vegetal and dry varieties. They include Bath Gin, distilled in the cellars under the bar and with a winking Jane Austen on the bottle. The dapper bartenders really know their stuff, so ask for recommendations, such as the beguiling Lady Liberty - Bath Gin, Cointreau, orange marmalade, lime and cranberry juice, Peychauds bitters and rose champagne. The place gets packed at weekends. The second bar upstairs can be less crowded. Gin-making classes are offered too.

Without the buzzing, walled terrace that spills out below an alley near Bath Abbey, you would hardly know The Hideout was there. A small but jovial den – once for highwaymen and thieves, now for lovers of a good dram – there are more than 200 different types of whisky on the shelves of the stone walls. Staff will suggest that you try a shot of Crab Smasher which was invented here. It’s an invigorating blast of peaty 10-year-old Ardbeg, Scapegrace Gold gin, Green Chartreuse and bitters.

A subterranean late-night hangout, where the rooms are decorated in shabby-chic styles – a chaise-longue here, a wind-up gramophone there, replica Renaissance murals on vaulted ceilings, that sort of thing. If you’re feeling decadent – and in this environment you should be – have a glass of absinthe, poured over a sugar lump on a slotted spoon. The playlist is eclectic but upbeat. Opium is centrally located but hidden: from the city centre, cross Pulteney Bridge, turn first left, then left again.

Parking information and directions to Henry Street.

It is possible to drive straight up to the house on Henry Street, off load your bags into the house and then drive over to Manver Street car park which is 30 seconds around the corner. Depending on what time you arrive there is free parking outside the house from 8pm-8am, space permitting, and it is the same in Manver St car park but you do need either to move your car from outside the house at 8 am or remember to pay in the morning at Manver Street. The traffic wardens unfortunately are very punctual ! In Manver Street carpark you can pay for your entire stay at the beginning then you do not have to worry about going back to top it up each day or getting up early to move your car. Bath does get very busy so if Manver St is full then South Gate carpark is just around the corner under the shopping centre. If you park near to the Top Man entrance you will pop up in the lift about 50m from the house. Your registration number is scanned as you enter the carpark and you pay at the lift entrance when you leave.
