Places to See

A visit to Cahuita National Park is an absolute must. Get to the park early or go on an overcast day to see more animals. You’ll spot Capuchin and Howler Monkeys, sloths, various birds and more. I recommend going with a tour guide if you want to maximum your animal sightings as guides know which trees to look in. Swimming at the beaches in the park is highly recommend!

There are actually several waterfalls in the mountains of Bribri just a short drive from Puerto Viejo and depending on your desire to hike or easily arrive each of the falls is worth a visit. The water at the falls is always a bit on the chilly side so it’s a great trip to take on a hot day when the sun might be too intense for another day at the beach. For more information about which falls to check out and how to get there, ask Liz or Jonathan.

As you head south down the main road, out of Puerto Viejo you’ll come across several little communities, the first of which is Cocles. Also home to the largest and most popular beach, with the best surfing spot for beginners and experts alike, Cocles is a great place to spend an entire days. There are plenty of restaurants, a couple bars, and two grocery stores in the area. No ATMs outside of town so make sure and grab some cash in town before you head out for the day.

As you continue down the main road, you’ll notice the trees and jungle become thicker as you make your way towards Manzanillo. Before you reach the end of the road though you’ll come to Punta Uva, home to some of Costa Rica’s most beautiful and famous beaches. Punta Uva and Arrecife are absolutely stunning and whole this is not a spot for surfers, this is a spot for kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, and simply enjoying the break taking views. There are very few restaurants and only one tiny store in Punta Uva so it’s a good idea to pack your own water and snacks for the day.

Manzanillo is the end of the road or as they say in Spanish, “Donde el Diablo se perdió su chancleta.” (Where the devil lost his flip flop.) This very sleepy, very small beach town gets packed with visitors on the weekends but during the week you might find this paradise near deserted. Be sure to enjoy the view from the second story at Maxis and don’t miss the Mirador or Lookout in the National Wildlife Refuge at the end of town.

Nestled between Cocles and Punta Uva lies the small community of Playa Chiquita. Home to many expats and some of the areas oldest families Playa Chiquita is a funky blend of the old and the new. There are several restaurants and one supermarket but prices tend to be on the high side in this area, so be aware. The beaches here are more like private coves tucked into the jungle. Coral reef protects the coves from waves so this is a place to unwind and relax in the calm waters.
