Food scene

We are just a few steps walking distance to the Ocean Grill & Tiki bar. Great fish tacos (ask for fries to substitute chips) or generous Burgers or plump large Oysters (I like mine in a Caesar Salad). Thursday nights at 7:00 - the Tiki bar really rocks with Live bands fireworks seen from Downtown launch site. Afternoon chill out in between sunning with a cold beer or fancy (too pricey) drinks. Ask for a house Margarita. Cheaper and just delicious.

Vinnies Italian for Pizza served Italian style on a tall platter or a huge all meat delicious Stromboli (my fave)!! Their Fettucine Alfredo is pretty good and the servers are super friendly. Glasses of wine are large and very generously poured for a reasonable price. Just across the street and down about 2-3 blocks north of our Beach House at Tiki.

Intimate and romantic - Freddies is my hands-down favorite for delicious Italian food. Extra large portions and five-star dining. Call days ahead to get a group reservation. Sadly, they don’t take reservations for small groups. But go and grab a seat at the friendly fun smallish bar and eat your meal there. I’m the summer wait times can be up to an hour. Go in and give them your telephone number and then go check out the Kure Beach pier shop or go onto the pier for free and see what the fishermen and ladies are catching. Maybe say hi to a large seated Pelican named Charlie who hangs out there too. Save room for their awesome Pane Ristuca bread and dip it is Olive Oil (ask for some pesto, and add a generous spoonful of their grated ormeaan in the shakers). Stir and yum. Also their homemade secret recipe salad dressing and family style salad bowl is generous. Be careful you don’t fill up on these amazing starters :-) For dinner be adventurous and try my recent fave Porto Ella Mushrolm Parmesan - like chicken parm only two kegs portobello caps instead. Like Egglplant Parm? This is the place. This was my fave from 2011 on. I always ask for Linguine Alfredo as my side instead of spaghetti and then I have a take home lunch for next day. Wines are excellent and you can just do the carafe or half carafe. Best Stolis Martini on the island. Tell them Jeanettes way: Shaken 3 times only and served neat with Cocktail Onions.

SeaWitch is the place to go any night after 8:00PM for awesome live music and friendly crowds and attentive service. Owner Jenny’s staff make the best lump crab cakes in Wilmington imho. And SeaWitch (owned by friend Jenny) has wonderful live music most nights. A small Cover charge may apply to big name bands on Saturday nights. Well worth it. Off season, generous burgers are just $5 on Tuesday’s or Wednesday’s. Seafood Chowder is rich and thick and not heavy on cornstarch like, ahem, some other restaurants use. Sunday Brunch is a must. Best Crabcakes Benedict and gentle music at noon or 1:00pm. Mimosas, large Bloody Marys... fun times. Bring the dog and eat outdoors!!

Breakfast old fashioned diner style with ultra cheap prices from the 70s go to Kate’s Pancake house. About .6 miles walk from Beach House at Tiki before you get to the Boardwalk area. I love all their generous omelettes and yummy down-home cooked potatoes. Often a long wait in the summer if you go at late morning. Noisy and fun and super family friendly. Food service is clean and fast once you get the order in.

Hands down this is my favorite restraint in Carolina Beach. The food is always consistently good and generous and the service is almost always well handled. If there’s a wait, order a cocktail in the leather seated lounge to relax while you wait. A lovely throwback to the olden golden days of smoky lounges. Gather and chat with a local at the bar. Or even grab a seat and order your meal from the friendly bartenders. This restaurant is tucked back in Charlotte Avenue also about .8 miles from Beach House at Tiki. A former church, it is decorated with all the fishnets, lobster gear, paddles and seafaring items to give this an elegant seaside charm. My fave is the Grouper Piccata. Gently sautéed in butter, garlic and lemon and tossed with some mild capers - you’ll want to lick the plate clean. My late mom always loved their rib eye and my daughter Cat always got the Duck breast in cherry glaze if it was on the menu. The lobster Ravioli is another light and sumptuous dish. I’d disabuse you if the Mussels app. Got that for my birthday another year but it was bland and disappointing. Splurge at almost anything else in the menu. You won’t be disappointed. Be sure to let us know your favorite.

Havana’s is another favorite mostly because of the spacious outdoor dog friendly dining on their wraparound porches. Food can be a little hit or miss on their high end priced entrees. You can’t go wrong with their amazing reasonably priced Shrimp and Grits though. Personally, I love to make a dinner out of a bowl full of their best on the island seafood chowder (as voted by locals). Add their appetizer firecracker shrimp which is so delicious and this makes an entire meal by itself :-) Be sure to say Hi from us to the General Manager Adele. Their Sunday Brunch is elegant and VERY REASONANLY priced. Always comes with a large cut of their sweet sticky bun cake that you can take home for tomorrow’s coffee:-). Their crab cakes are also quite good as a brunch item.

Newly opened star chef-owned Salt Fish is tiny and intimate but high-end with reasonable prices and has wonderfully deliciously crafted fusion dishes. Owners hail from East Asia and they bring home new ideas from their journeys to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos combined with fresh seafood and whatever locally sourced vegetables she finds. Cocktails are also quite Imaginative and worth the adventure. Since it is a very small place, see if you can make advance reservations or go early.

Lazy Pirate is a fun family-friendly place. Hang out at the outdoor area or pick up a Volleyball game or some Corn Hole. Sometimes service is hard to find so go to the window to order a beer or wine. Best Fish Tacos in the island with fantastic fries. Sunday nights host awesome Reggae bands in honor of our late friend Danny Swinson who became an iconic supporter of reggae on the island and in the Wilmington area.
