This is more of a classic California beach town. Tons of tourist souvenirs shops, and fun stores to walk around in. The pier is great to walk on and look for whales. The beach is nice and boogie boarding, body surfing or just playing in the sand is perfect here.

This is the cleanest and best-maintained beach. It is also very kid-friendly with a wonderful playground, little aquarium, and lots of cute shops and beach rentals. During the spring and summer parking is very difficult.

Hiking and playing on the large sand dunes is one of our favorite activities. You can access the dunes at the 1205 Silver Spur Place, Oceano. If you can bring boogie boards or sleds, you can get going pretty fast down the dunes and it’s a blast! This is a great place to run the kids around! As of Sept. 2020 they no longer allow dogs here.

Monarch Butterfly Grove (15 minute drive) From late October to February, the butterflies cluster in the limbs of a grove of Eucalyptus trees at Pismo State Beach. The grove is easily accessible. It is located on State Highway 1 at the south boundary of the city limits of Pismo Beach. Visitors are greeted by knowledgeable and well-informed volunteer docents offering daily talks and information. The butterflies form dense clusters with each one hanging with its wing down over the one below it to form a shingle effect. This provides shelter from the rain and warmth for the group. The weight of the cluster help keeps it from whipping in the wind and dislodging the butterflies. Our colony is one of the largest in the nation, hosting an average of 25,000 butterflies over the last five years.

The best biking trail is the Bob Jones Trail. This is a great walking/biking or jogging trail. It starts at 7000 Ontario Road, San Luis Obispo. (15 miles away). It's right next to the Avila Valley Barn, which is a seasonal fruit stand, petting zoo, hay rides, pumpkin patch, bakery, and more!

Sycamore Crest Trail- 22 minute drive away. This is an easier hike that will also take you to the same view as Avila Ridge; it’s just easier to get there. Very safe and easy enough for kids. To get there park at Sycamore Hot Springs resort (towards the back of the parking lot is recommended, as the signs say you can only park there if you are a guest). Head towards the restaurant, then you’ll see a small road to the right of the restaurant. It will take you up towards the start of the hike through beautiful Sycamore trees.

Avila Valley Barn 20 minute drive, 560 Avila Beach Drive. SEASONAL This is a great place to bring your young children - they can feed the animals, take a ride on a hay wagon, have a picnic, get ice cream, and enjoy fresh fruit, veggies and homemade pies. This is a really fun place- especially in the fall. A fun day would be walk/bike Bob Jones trail. Comes out at Avila Beach. Play on the beach and/or beach park. Finish the day with a visit to the Avila Valley Barn
