This beach park is beautiful for sunsets! If you are up for a little adventure, use the public BBQ grills the beach park offers (plan it and get all required stuff for such a BBQ at Foodland close by. There is great wood around to burn around the whole area). You can see the entire sun disappearing into the ocean from here, which you cannot really from the Fairmont Hotel or other close by spots. Bring a beach chair, some snacks or drinks, and simply enjoy. Sunsets depend on the time of the year. If you arrive the beach around 5-5:30pm you have good timing and you should be able to pick the best location to sit down. Note: This beach park is not ideal for entering the water for snorkeling and swimming as it is pretty rocky. However, there is a path along the ocean, which connects to other beaches at “Puako” (5-10 minute walk from Holoholokai) and the Fairmont hotel in the opposite direction. Towards Puako, there are a few nice sandy spots to enter the water and snorkel around. Personally, the Puako side is more attractive for snorkeling than the Mauna Lani Beach Club and the Fairmont Hotel Bay as it is a bit more wild and untouched. Regardless, always have a buddy with you when going in the water and check for calm conditions. Intermediate level. If anything, we freedive and spearfish there quite a bit - just ask us if you read this and have any unanswered questions.

Sightseeing

Manta Night Diving for FREE! Normal tourists pay a few hundred dollars for this experience to snorkel with Manta Rays at night. Locals go to the furthest right of the Mauna Kea Hotel beach and enter the water from there. All sand, easy access, and it’s a very short swim along the cliff to the light that shines and attracts the Manta Rays. You can get an overview by walking to the light first and check the little spot out from above. Tip: make sure to get in the parking lot before 5pm as it closes, don’t worry you can always leave. It’s free parking. Manta Rays show up about an hour after it’s dark. Technically, you don’t need a flash light but heads up: this could be only something for more courageous people with some snorkeling experience that aren’t afraid of swimming one minute through 10 feet (3 meters) of water. Bring your snorkel and fins we provide if you are up for it, that’s all you really need. It’s a cool experience you will remember. Keep in mind you are always responsible for yourself.

Vegan place, tasty! We are not vegans but I appreciate healthy nurturing food. This is a good place to go to pretty much anytime of the day. They also offer fresh, healthy cold pressed juices, which we love. Ordering food can take a little longer as they make everything fresh but it’s a nice experience we enjoy.

Fresh and locally grown quality food. The Big Island offers a variety of excellent fruits and vegetables you don’t want to miss! Our favorites we recommend are: apple-bananas, strawberry papayas, avocados, lychee and WHITE pineapple (when in season). This is one of Waimea’s Saturday farmers markets, the other one is more in Waimea town. Both are nice and worth while to explore. However, this one is a bit more local and less touristy. It’s also located on a cool ranch with a western/country vibe.

For meat lovers! This is the place to get your locally raised Non-GMO Big Island Beef for a nice BBQ here at the Ka Milo pool area. The meat is a fraction of the price the grocery stores charge and some items you will find only at J J’s. If you are around Honoka’a because you are checking out Waipio Valley, J J’s is literately on your way to Waipio Valley. Big Island’s beef is raised on the green pastures around Mauna Kea. It’s clean meat and tasty! Sometimes you can spot the cattle grassing when driving to Waimea or Honokaa. Tuesday’s are fresh meat deliveries so you’ll have the best choices then.

Breakfast buffet at “Halani” restaurant or a la carte is a great way start in the day! It’s approximately $100 for two people. Very nice! HāLani is the resort's open-air eatery well-appointed alongside the pool and expansive oceanfront lawn. Open Daily: Breakfast 6:30am - 11:00am

Shopping

Shopping is good in the Mauna Lani Resort. However, there is a little bigger selection of shops in the neighborhood resort, Waikoloa beach resort, just 10 minutes on the highway towards Kona.

Use Costco gas station to refill car.

*For Costco members only*. Before you return your rental car at the airport, you probably want to fill up the gas tank. We have a Costco 11 minutes away from the Kona International airport where you may fill up your gas tank and save money. Alternatively, there is the “Ohana Fuels” gas station in the same direction as Costco only 5 minutes away from the Kona airport.

Bring active wear cloth for warm temperatures.

You may just need a small carry on luggage each for this trip. We suggest to bring one or two fine outfits if you want to go to a nice dinner but besides that personally we prefer active wear from Nike or Adidas for example. That simply keeps things cooler in these temperatures. Flip flops or sandals are mostly worn in Hawai’i and ARE part of the local culture and dress code - even at a dinner at 5 star hotel here! Make sure to bring and wear hats and sunglasses. Sunblock is good or just wear active wear longs levees. Keeps chemicals off your skin. The sun gets strong around 9:30AM - 4PM.

Hawaiian phrases 101

“Aloha” is very common to greet and say good bye to people. It means “with love”. “Mahalo” means thank you. “A hui hou” means until we see each other again soon. Try them and see how you feel saying these words while you can here during your visit in Hawaii.

Ross offers nice brands for low prices.

For international travelers that want to shop while on vacation. Ross is a good place to go shopping for brands like Polo Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger and many more. It’s like an outlet but you’d be surprised what you will find. When you drive into Kona it’s the first major turn right off the highway. You will see the blue sign “Ross Dress for Less”.
