Cape Schanck Lighthouse
Take a tour of one of the oldest lighthouses in Victoria, built all the way back in 1859. Climb the stone steps to the lamp room and look out over the blue waters of Bass Strait from the balcony. Twenty one metres tall and located on the southernmost tip of the Mornington Peninsula, the Cape Schanck Lighthouse is one of few lighthouses still operating as it did during the 1800s. Look out for whales during migration season if you are lucky.

Beach
Rye Ocean Beach lies 4 km due south of the more quiescent Rye Bay Beach. The beach is accessed via Sandy Beach Road, with a signposted road leading to a large car park. The beach is located inside the Mornington Peninsula National Park, and natural sand dunes back the length of this 4 km long beach. Foot tracks also lead to the beach from the St Andrews settlement at the eastern end, and at Orr Point at the western end.The beach faces south-west and receives waves averaging 1.8 m. These produce large persistent rips every 300 m, with permanent rips against the rocks and reefs below the car park.

Sorrento village is an historic township on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia, only 13 minutes from Rye Beach Cottage. It has a rich history, believed to be the first European settlement in Victoria discovered in 1803, and later developed as a tourist destination for the rich and famous by George Coppin from the 1870’s. Sorrento is lucky to boast having some of the oldest and highest limestone buildings in Australia, and be one of the few townships to have the rugged ocean beach at one end and pristine Port Philip Bay beach at the other.
