KAPANAI’A BAY – This is one of the best-kept secrets in North Kohala. This small pebble and sand beach is backed by trees and was carved out of the cliffs by a small brook. Even during moderate surf, you may see keiki boogie boarding in the back part of the bay. Surfers venture farther out where the waves are completely unobstructed. While there’s not much sand and the water is a bit murky, the bay is very picturesque and a wonderful place for a picnic. The catch is that the access road requires a 4WD and the nerve to punish it between maintenance cycles.

KAPA’A BEACH PARK – No sand at this beach, just rocks and a little coral rubble. The attractive assets here are the exceptionally clear water for snorkeling and SCUBA, usually abundant fish, coupled with somewhat protected waters except during periods of high surf. Clear water makes it a good place to take underwater fish pictures. Not much coral but plenty of sea life. Rarely visited during the week, but easy to access just north of mile marker 16 on Highway 270. Facilities include possibly dilapidated restrooms, as well as a BBQ and picnic tables. Excellent view of Maui and a nice place to watch the sunset.

Mahukona boasts crystal clear water and ridiculously easy access for snorkeling or swimming. You can practically drive up, open your door and fall in. SPENCER BEACH PARK – A great family beach. Located just south of Kawaihae Harbor, the beach is protected by a long offshore reef and the extensive landfill of the harbor to the north. The beach slope is very gentle and the swimming is usually quite good. Keiki (kids) enjoy the usually calm waters of Spencer. Though the water is a bit cloudy due to its proximity to the harbor, this shouldn’t deter you from enjoying the ocean here. If you snorkel, you will probably see miniature underwater volcanoes from small amounts of cold freshwater seeping from the floor. Snorkeling is only fair due to slightly cloudy water. Access is through the Mauna Kea Resort entrance, right on Kamahoi and don’t be deterred when it starts looking like an entrance to the maintenance yard. MAUNA KEA BEACH/KAUNA’OA BEACH – This is a great beach! Probably the most classically perfect beach on the island. This gorgeous crescent of sand over a quarter-mile long offers very fine swimming and boogie boarding during calm seas. On the left side of the beach is a bunch of rocks, creating a linear reef that offers outstanding snorkeling. The right side of the beach also offers interesting snorkeling but is more exposed and should only be snorkeled by strong swimmers. This beach and Hapuna are the two best frolicking beaches on the island, if not the state. Mauna Kea is usually less windy than Hapuna. Full facilities. Only 40 cars allowed in the Mauna Kea Resort parking lot at a time, which is usually a problem, so try to arrive before 10a.m. or take the 1-mile shoreline trail from the north end of Hapuna Beach. ‘ANAEHO’OMALU BAY – Another nice Kohala beach. Even those born and raised here usually call this six-syllable tongue twister A BAY. This long, curving salt-and-pepper sand beach is popular with both locals and visitors. The swimming is best in the sandy center, whereas the snorkeling (though not great) is best on the right side past the sandy area. The water is not as clear as what you’ll find at other nearby beaches, but it’s so tranquil here, you won’t care. Windsurfing is popular here. “Anaeho’omalu is well known throughout the islands for its two large fishponds. These exceptionally picturesque and placid pools were used by ancient Hawaiians for raising mullet. There’s a pleasant paved path on the mauka side of the fishpond that’s worth a stroll. Numerous signs along the way give information about the fishponds and the area in general. To get here from the HWY, take Waikoloa Beach Road, turn left before the Marriott and park in the lot before the end of the road. You can walk to this beach from our villa.

KE-AWA-IKI BEACH – This black sand-and-gravel-lined bay is never crowded due to the access-to get there you have to walk on a lava road half the time, and rougher ‘a’a trail to the right of the fence the other half. Few on the island even know it’s there. (It takes about 15 minutes to walk to it.) The water off the left (south) is clear and offers good snorkeling when calm, but be wary of currents. The best snorkeling is usually in the center of the bay. If you keep walking past the southern edge of the bay, there are lots of tide-pools to explore on an older, smooth pahoehoe lava shelf at low tide. Past the right (northern) side of Ke-awa-iki Bay is Pueo Bay, lined with black pebbles and semi-protected with nice swimming on calm days. Located 20 miles north of Kailua-Kona just after mile marker 79.
