Skiing & Snowboarding Tips

Purchase lift tickets in advance and then pick them up onsite. Pickup location varied by day of week.
Get your rentals here! Located at the entrance to North Creek Resort a three minute walk from our place. This is the best secret place to rent your ski and snowboard gear because the line-ups are way less than in the Village. Super nice people too. They also rent snowshoes.

Toronto Ski Club is a private, members-only club that you'll see from our deck. They do not "own" the hills, just their clubhouse. You are welcome to ski on the North hills with your Blue Mountain day lift pass. Sorry, you can't go inside or on the deck unless you are a guest of a member. If they are having an apres ski party, they tend to quiet down by 7pm. So don't be concerned by the party vibe at 4pm - they all ski hard and sleep hard and go home early. Lots of kids here, and your kids can toboggan on the ski hill under our deck, usually between 4:30 and 6pm. After it gets dark the snow groomers come out to prepare the hills for the next day, and it's dangerous to be on the hills at the same time as groomers.

Our favourite restaurants and places

During ski season, this is a must-visit. Come early, right at 4pm in your ski gear. Casual, family vibe. They don't care if you have helmet hair. Extensive beer list. Amazing cheese fondue.

We love poking around in here on a rainy day. It's an indoor antique market with a lot of cool things that will make you say "hey, my grandmother used to have one just like that..."

This is the best restaurant in the Village for kids - classic pizza and pasta. It is busy so plan ahead - you can't just rock up at dinnertime and expect a spot. Call or drop by to get on the list before your kids get ravenous. It's worth it!

Neighbourhoods

Just down the road from our place is the T-junction of Grey Road 19 and Highway 26. This is where the Craigleith Heritage Depot is found, right across from Georgian Bay. In the good old days, trains from Toronto would deliver skiiers right into Craigleith. The train tracks are gone now and the old rail bed is now a groomed recreation path called the Georgian Bay Trail. The GBT goes about 30km from Collingwood to Meaford and meanders along the shoreline and through forests. It is an amazing trail for cycling and walking. Turn left at the bay and you'll find CircleK and Surf Cafe - pretty much everything you need from wine and beer, to candy to coffee and prepared meals.

Amazing, natural, spectacular. This is a serious, rugged hike - wear proper shoes. Not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs unfortunately.

Food scene

I love this little general store - a total throwback to simpler times. Bakery, fresh veg, prepared meals. It's about 25 minute drive over rolling hills and gorgeous scenery. The speed limit in Kimberley village is 40km/hour and they mean it! Don’t speed in this town.

Pack extra warm gear!

We travel with our kids who love to roll in the snow, so we pack two (or more!) of gloves, hats, hoodies, and snowpants/jacket/boots if you've got spares. This is our weekend place so we don't have a dryer in the condo. There is a coin laundry in the basement of building 2. We just hang up all our gear overnight and it's usually dry by morning.

If you'd like to walk to Blue Mountain Village...

Blue Mountain Village is a 20-25 minute easy flat walk. You could walk along Grey Road 19, but it's a bit busy. We'd suggest exiting North Creek Resort at the main driveway, crossing Grey Road 19 onto Craigmore Crescent. Follow your way to Heritage Drive, then cross Grey Road 19 again at Blue Mountain Inn and along Jozo Wieder Blvd. to the Village. This is a safer and quieter route and bit of an interesting architectural tour of the ski chalets in the neighbourhood.

Lift Passes - book in advance

Blue Mountain sometimes has caps on how many lift passes they sell, so book yours online in advance. This is important for holidays and weekends.

Blue Mountain Shuttle - new booking info

The Blue Mountain Village Association (BMVA) runs a shuttle bus for members only. We are BMVA members and our access to the shuttle bus extends to you as our Guests. See the notice on our fridge for the booking link (for some silly reason Airbnb won't let me post a weblink here) North Creek Shuttle Hut This is located in the parking lot next to use, by Toronto Ski Club. Look for the open air hut near the main road Village Market - this is the main stop Blue Mountain Village Blue Mountain Inn - this is the closest spot for night skiing (Valley Express lift)

Laundry

As our weekend place, we don't have laundry in our unit, but there is a coin-op laundry on the property, in building 2, about a 1 minute walk away For kids, pack extra clothes, boots, mittens, jackets - they’ll be outside a lot so it helps to have a second set of everything.

Hiking on Blue Mountain property - $$

To hike across Blue Mountain property, it's a paid activity and you can get tickets at Activity Central in the Village. But over on our North side of the resort, there's a lot less foot traffic. I've never seen anyone here checking passes. Head up the back trails ("1940" and "Cagey") behind North Creek Resort. You'll find little bridges and waterfalls. It's very steep so hiking shoes are required. Take water and snacks. Kids will have fun playing in the waterfalls, but use common sense and safety of course.

Ski trails near our place

The hills outside our door are called the North hills, serviced by the Weider Express lift. Day skiing only - the North side closes by 4:15pm. The green/easy route home from the other side (Valley, Village) is down Happy Valley, sharp left turn onto Dog Sled and down past the lift to our gate. If you are a more advanced skier you can take Schuss (blue/advanced) straight down to our gate.

Where to buy/pickup lift passes

Buy passes online for best rates. See if Blue Mountain’s “Double Down” pass is still for sale early in the season - it’s a good deal if there’s two people skiing. The closest lift pass pickup is in the hut in P4/North Hill/Weider Express walking distance from our place. But it’s usually only open on weekends and peak holidays. After that the next closest ticket windo is Valley, attached to back of Blue Mountain Inn. Take a 2 minute drive down the road, grab your passes, drive back to our place and then ski on at North/Weider (for experienced skiiers). For beginners, drive to Village or South.

Night Skiing

The North hills outside our place offer day skiing only. If you are skiing back to our place you need to be back by 4:15 before the ski patrol closes the North side. Night skiing is offered at Valley, Village, South and Orchard lifts which are a short drive, or serviced by the Blue Mountain Shuttle.
