Sightseeing

Picturesque village close to Hinterthal. In Summer you can hike to Maria Alm over the mountains. There is an especially lovely walk to Jufen which is half way to Maria Alm. In Jufen, there is a hotel with a play area for children and an archery course. It is very picturesque with a quaint chapel. It takes about 2.5 hours to walk from Hinterthal to Maria Alm via Jufen. It's then possible to get a bus back to Hinterthal. If you don't like climbing hills, you could catch a bus to Hinterthal and catch the Natrunbahn up the first stretch on the way back!

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road (in German Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße) is the highest surfaced mountain pass road in Austria. It connects Bruck in the state of Salzburg with Heiligenblut in Carinthia via Fuscher Törl and Hochtor Pass at 2,504 m (8,215 ft). The road is named after the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain. Built as a scenic route, a toll (€33) is assessed for passage. I haven't yet done this but friends say it's a fantastic experience. It's a National Park and this stretch is a private road stretching 48kms. Fantastic views of Grossglockner mountain.

Berchtesgaden is a German town in the Bavarian Alps on the Austrian border. South of town, Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, has a restaurant with alpine views. You can book a tour but make sure you do this before you go. The Dokumentation Obersalzberg museum chronicles the Nazi era. Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden illuminates the salt mine’s 500-year history. Lifts lead to Obersalzberg and Rossfeld ski areas. To the south, trails cross Berchtesgaden National Park. It takes about an hour and 10 minutes to drive there. There is also a beautiful walk around the end of Konigsee.

The heart of the Salzburg Lake District are the lakes, Mattsee, Grabensee, Obertrumersee - (the three also known as the Trumerseen) and the Wallersee, north of the Mozart city of Salzburg. This is a wonderful place for a drive or to cycle around. It takes about 1.5 hours to drive there from Hinterthal so will be a full day experience. There are 600 kilometres of well-constructed cycling tracks leading over hills and dales with superb views, through thickets and along unspoiled lakeside banks for both sporty and leisure-time cyclists. There are 7 bike hire points and service stations, also 20 charging points for electric bicycles, for either a random cycling tour or one of the 14 organised bike tours.
