Narrow Neck Beach
Because it is swimmable at all tides and very safe for children.
At low tide, you can easily walk around the rocks and foreshore from Narrow Neck Beach to Cheltenham Beach. The walk takes around 20 minutes, and if you are feeling fit, you can explore North Head which is accessed from the southern end of Cheltenham Beach.

Watching the gannets at Muriwai Gannet Colony at Muriwai Beach on Auckland's west coast if a must if you are interested in ocean birds. The walk takes you to viewing platforms above the gannet colony and it is fascinating watching the gannets take off and land from the rocks below.

There are many tunnels under North Head which are fun to explore, make sure you bring a torch! There are many walking tracks around North Head, including our favourite one around the base. Great views of Hauraki Gulf and Waitemata Harbour.

Another great place to view the wonderful Hauraki Gulf and Waitemata Harbour. Just a short walk from Devonport Village. There is a disappearing gun emplacement at the summit with interesting history information provided.

Waiheke Island is well worth a visit if you have time. It is normally a day trip, with a 35 minute ferry ride from Devonport Wharf to Matiatia on Waiheke Island. From the Wharf at Matiatia you can walk or catch a bus to Oneroa Beach which is fantastic for swimming, eating or shopping. There are many vineyards with fine dining on the island, as well as great walks around the coastline, and adventure events.

From the Wharf at Matiatia you can walk or catch a bus to Oneroa Beach which is fantastic for swimming, eating or shopping. There are many vineyards with fine dining on the island, as well as great walks around the coastline, and adventure events.
Rangitoto Island is a favourite day excursion of ours. It is a ferry ride from Devonport to Rangitoto, then you can either walk to the summit (via lava caves if you wish) or you can use the small train which will take you part way to the summit. The island is an extinct volcano, and is largely made up of scoria, a roung volcanic rock. It is advisable to wear good shoes, and to take your own picnic food and water as there are no shops on the island. Also plenty of sunscreen and a hat!

Takapuna Beach is a great centre for shopping with the Shore City Galleria mall and many shops located on Hurstmere Road and Lake Road through the centre. The beach is just a short walk from the main bus route, and the 814 bus will take you from our place to Takapuna. Great restaurants, cafe and a variety of shops.
