Shopping Mall
City Square is a particular favorite for Singaporean shoppers, as the mall is connected to the CIQ Complex via a pedestrian bridge, giving easy access to its myriad shops and eateries. There are so many shops to check out that you probably won’t exhaust all your options, but if you do, then the more recently-renovated Komtar JBCC Mall is just next door.

Another new shopping destination that held their soft opening earlier this year in March is R&F mall, which houses some 106 retail stores (46 of them being F&B establishments). Located directly opposite City Square Mall, R&F mall is about a 10-minute walk away from JB's CIQ checkpoint through the link bridge. The three-storey retail space spans over 800,000 sq ft and houses a plethora of shopping, entertainment and dining establishments offering fashion, food and leisure activities. Some of R&F's anchor tenants include Jaya Grocer and Emperor cinema, promising shoppers a luxe experience that will make converting your SGD worth it. Since City Square Mall doesn't really have a proper grocery shop, Jaya Grocer is definitely a step up, providing a wide variety of fresh and high-quality produce. Branded as Southeast Asia's first luxe cinema, say goodbye to stale popcorn and chips at Hong Kong's Emperor cinemas and hello to food you'd expect to find at a cafe like loaded hotdogs and Korean spicy chicken. Sit back and relax on sumptuous leather seats that are fully equipped with USB charging ports and enjoy your high-end cinematic experience.

Touted as JB's largest integrated shopping mall, The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey is paradise on earth for shopaholics and is said to be better than all its JB mall-predecessors. If you've never heard of the place, here are some highlights to look out for: Yes, we know iconic Japanese convenience store Family Mart has a store at City Square. But the one at The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey is said to be bigger and better - there's even a little sitting area just like the ones in Japan and Korea to enjoy all the snacks on the spot. And if you're a hardcore fan of Din Tai Fung's signature xiao long baos (XLBs) and egg fried rice, you might want to give spinoff brand Din by Din Tai Fung a try. This is the first pork-free Din Tai Fung outlet in JB and they've added variants to the menu like lamb XLB and sambal chicken XLB. After filling your bellies, walk down memory lane and visit SOGO, a departmental store popular in the 80s and 90s that many Singaporeans are still nostalgic about.

Dethroned by The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey, Paradigm Mall was the largest in JB when its doors were opened to the public back in 2017. Standing at an impressive seven-stories with over 500 retail shops operating on 1.3 million sq ft of retail space, there's even an ice skating rink within the megamall. Located conveniently within the Skudai district, the mall is just a 10-minute drive from JBCC and perhaps due to its sheer size (it's larger than VivoCity if you need a local reference), it still appears relatively untouched, allowing plenty of elbow room as you shop to your heart's content. So if you want to take advantage of the facilities before it's overrun by uncles and aunties who can sniff out a good deal across the Causeway, you still have some time.

Curry fish head for breakfast? It may seems heavy for many of us, but Kam Long Curry Fish Head is probably one of the locations you want to skip lunch crowd. We took a 5 minutes short walk from City Square @ Johor Bahru and the place was already crowded even on a weekday morning. Kam Long has been in business for more than 30 years. This is one of those unpretentious old school kopitiam eatery that only sells one dish – curry fish head. Many a time, I have seen how restaurants create a whole menu of 100 dishes, but never do a dish at its best. Sometimes, they are even unsure of what’s their signature dish. But here at Kam Long, you know they are selling curry fish head and yet has faithful patrons willing to wait under the hot sun for the food, it has got to be good.

The selection of food at this traditional coffeeshop is amazing! Kaya butter toast and buns, soft-boiled kampung eggs, nyonya kueh, curry puffs, fried mee siam, fried noodles, yam cake and bang kwang kueh (Singapore's version of soon kueh)!!! Everything here tastes amazing - fresh and authentic and delicious! Although this is a very busy coffeeshop that is always very crowded, and getting a table is challenging, this is certainly a must-visit place to enjoy a local breakfast.

No trip to JB would be complete without paying a visit to Hiap Joo Bakery! Opened since 1919, this is one of the oldest and traditional bakeries in the city. Anyone who's been to Hiap Joo will tell you not to miss their signature banana cake. This cake has just the perfect moisture and the taste isn't too sweet as well. If you love banana cakes, this is definitely one not to miss! Other than the banana cake, another highly recommended item is their coconut bun. This freshly baked bun has grated coconut fillings with palm sugar and you'll definitely want more after tasting it 😋
