This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. If I were to only eat at one place in Louisville, I would splurge and eat here. Anthony Lamas is an amazing Chef and Seviche is a spectacular restaurant.

Once upon a time this was the best place in the city to have a late night bite. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian or a meat lover they'll have something for you. I’m a bit nostalgic for the old vibe and I’m not sure if it’s still the same caliber of dining it was once- but in a pinch and trying to find somewhere that will have something for everyone- it’ll do the job.

I simply mention this because it's out by Iroquois Amphitheater and an option before or after a show. But if good Vietnamese food is the goal-then I would stick with Nam Nam Cafe in St Matthews.

Not my favorite BBQ in the city, but a good choice if you're in NULU. You can get a shot of whiskey and a tall beer for $10. Their BBQ salad is my go to, (I'm a sucker for fried pickles) and it always last me at least two meals it's so big!

Although Izzy and I disagree on this one, I believe El Mundo has the best farm to table Mexican food in town, other than Anthony Lamas at Seviche their fish taco are fantastic, and they have great margaritas as well. If you happen to be here in the summer, their happy hour is always lovely pull up a seat at the bar and have a drink or two. Taco Tuesday is a thing here $5 Queso and street tacos...did someone say cheese? They have recently closed their original location on Frankfort Avenue but their spot in The Highlands is up and going strong- Albeit, not the same atmosphere.

Roots is awesome! Lovely vegetarian and vegan restaurant. They make their tofu in house, and it's usually open later than the rest. Can you tell we usually eat late? Super casual and great for carry-out or delivery. We're both huge fans of the Udon Noodle Soup, but ask them to hold back on the spice level if you aren't a fan of spicy food.

Hands down some of the best Italian in the city. It's super chic, right in the heart of NULU, super fresh and a can't miss if you love homemade pasta. If you don't have a reservation they have a big bar and it's possible to grab a seat, but only if you're lucky. They seem to be busy most days, and honestly it’s super expensive for pasta for sure. The only saving grace is the portions are large enough to share or take home half for lunch the next day.

We love this place for brunch or a sunny day on their fantastic patio. Not to mention they have some amazing happy hour specials, if you want to get a deal. This is by far one of my favorite places in the city. It has been around forever and it doesn't get any more local than this place. It's a liquor store-if you're looking for a random bottle of bourbon, it's worth a look. They claim to have the coldest beer cave in the city, but where their real charm lies is at the deli counter. I love their spicy pickles, egg salad and my standard smoked turkey on pumpernickel. But every local has their go-to favorite combo and it's up to you to make your favorite combination. You simply go in, order at the deli counter, grab a drink, chips or whatever else on the shelves, grab a seat at a table with people that have been coming there for 20+ years and simply enjoy. You pay at the counter when you leave-just take the little paper order slip and tell them whatever else you happened to grabbed (you may want to try an Ale 8 from a glass bottle. Which is a local KY caffeinated gingerly.) Just writing about it, makes me want to go.

Nam Nam is owned by a friend of mine. It's farm to table Vietnamese food, and it's absolutely delicious. Any day of the week you'll find Dave, his brother Chris or and/or his Mom in the kitchen cooking up a storm. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but the Shaking Beef is my favorite in the city and you have to get the rice with an egg on top of it. Like many places they're closed in the middle of the day-so make sure to check their hours before heading over to St Matthews. It's also a great option for Carry Out, of course if you enjoy the atmosphere of a little cafe hole in the wall- this is your vibe, nothing fancy except the flavor.

If you're down for the drive, this is the best Indian food in Louisville. I say this easily as I lived in London for 10 years and know a good curry when I have it. Always a hit. But be warned it's in a mostly empty strip mall-but aren't all the best places?

Mayan Cafe is a Louisville staple. One of the first restaurants in what is now the NULU district and one of the only Farm-to-Table establishments still in the area. While some things change others don't, and Mayan is always reliable. The food is unpretentious yet unique. The restaurant is small and intimate and so is the menu. We really love this quaint Germantown gastro pub. It's a solid choice if you have any vegetarians in your group as they do amazing things with Jackfruit and their seasonal salads are usually a hit. Their burger is also legit. We're not beer drinkers, but those that are will definitely find something to enjoy here. There are 3 bars at Hotel Genevieve worth trying out, and it all depends on the time of year and day you're visiting. If you happen to be around during warm weather, the balcony bar overlooking Market Street, is a perfect setting to enjoy a glass of wine or bubbles, and soak up the view and light. If it's a bit colder the cocktail bar inside, on the same floor, is absolutely gorgeous and totally worth a peak into no matter what time you visit. Finally, if you're out late and are in search of a night cap, there is a speak easy cocktail lounge behind the yellow door in the candy shop on the ground floor.

I'm placing this eclectic spot in drinks and nightlife as we tend to go to the bar-which specializes in natural organic wines and cocktails, but there is a speciality bodega attached to the bar that also serves coffee, has specialty food products, life truffles and canned fish and pre-made pasta from Lotsa Pasta. It's definitely worth a trip, but I would get my essentials on down the road as the bodega is a bit fancy and on the expensive side. Lots of fun stuff to check out though, including local chocolates.

In the heart of Germantown, Hauck's is a Louisville landmark and has recently been converted into a neighborhood bar. You can grab some food, a pint, or a bourbon. Find a spot to chill indoors along the antique bar or sit outside on the extensive patio. And if you happen to be in town on the last Monday in July. Schnitzelburg crowds onto the sidewalk of George Hauck Way (right beside Hauck's Corner) to eat bologna sandwiches, listen to ragtime music, and watch contestants swing a whittled broom stick in hopes of being crowned world champion. Uniquely Louisville and not to be missed.

Red Hog is the brother to Blue Dog Bakery and is one of the finest butcher's in town. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays they do rotisserie Chicken's that are well worth the drive and a good way to stock the fridge with essentials that can be munched on for a few days. NuLu is the trendy part of town. It's filled with art galleries, distilleries, new hotels, fancy restaurants and everything cool. It's the part of town where locals go to see and be seen. NuLu is the trendy part of town. It's filled with art galleries, distilleries, new hotels, fancy restaurants and everything cool. It's the part of town where locals go to see and be seen. Every city has one...and Nulu is ours. It could be the only part of town you see, if you're only here for a night or two, but that would probably be a shame.
The Highlands is the original bohemian, eclectic part of town. It's filled with local shops, local classic James Beard award winning restaurants, smoke shops, consignment stores, big houses and big personalities. There are lots of bars in this neighborhood especially along Baxter Ave and on the weekends the 20 somethings line up on the street to get in and get down. Most bars are open until 4am...so there is always something going on. The Highlands encompasses a lot of neighborhoods but the main drag is from Irish Hill to Douglas Loop. There are parks, schools, farmers markets, ice cream shops, amazing schools and everything in-between.

Old Louisville is where you're staying. It's one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city and one I've lived in most of my Louisville life. It's beautiful especially if you're into Victorian architecture. The sidewalks are wide, the trees are big, the houses are gorgeous. It's the largest Victorian neighborhood in North America and it is just waiting to be explored. I can't imagine a better neighborhood to take a stroll through. There are a number of different guided walking tours you can take or head out on your own. If you're a fan of history, you're bound to fall in love.
