2 hours away is Ascutney Trails & Outdoors Center TUBING Tubing is happening at Ascutney Outdoors! Our dedicated tubing park is located just downslope from the Ascutney Outdoors Center. Our 500-foot tubing lift transports young and the young-at-heart uphill, and a slide down a groomed slope for hours of enjoyment. ALPINE SKIING Alpine skiers have been thrilled about Ascutney’s varied terrain and friendly appeal for over 60 years. Building on this tradition, Ascutney Outdoors offers a 1,800’ Doppelmayr T-bar that serves: 8 trails 26 acres of skiable terrain for all ability levels a 450-foot vertical drop the longest run of 3100 feet. You’ll come upon breathtaking views across the valley and beyond. Another popular area is accessible from the West Windsor Town Forest trailhead. Here you can venture up the Bicentennial Trail to explore open glades and find pockets of untracked powder. SAFETY IN THE BACKCOUNTRY Backcountry skiing & riding is always at your own risk. These areas are not groomed or maintained. Hidden hazards include, but are not limited to, fallen trees and old ski area infrastructure. These areas are not patrolled and there are no provisions for rescue. Weather and snow conditions can change without warning and dramatically change the difficulty of skiing. Never ski alone and be prepared for emergencies. Important safety tips for skiers are listed on the Catamount Trail Association’s website. Additional information on backcountry adventure on the mountain can be found on the Ascutney Trails Association website. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING A groomed loop for xc-skiing can be found on privately-owned Mile Long Field which is open for public use thanks to the generosity of the landowners. If you are exploring the ungroomed trail network on snowshoes or xc-skis, please refer to the maps at the AOC or trailheads, which will help guide you through forests, over fields, around frozen waterfalls and past rock formations.

Ice Fishing

We can't make it through the winter without fishing, so why not join us for a great winter experience? Try your luck with tip-ups and jigging for fish on some of Vermont's most scenic lakes with our guided instructional ice fishing tours. Throughout the winter we target many different species of fish in many different bodies of water. These species include Northern Pike, Landlocked Salmon and Lake Trout. We will also pursue many other types of fish, including Brown and Rainbow Trout, Yellow Perch and many more. These trips are great for people who don't even know what ice-fishing is, or for an experienced ice-fisherman who is visiting and doesn't have any of their gear. We will show you our secret techniques to getting more fish on the ice both by jigging and use of tip-ups. We explain when to use which setup and when its best to use a combination of the two. 1 person - $200 for 4 hours, $49 for each additional person. To book a trip or for more information please call the Fly Rod Shop at 1-802-253-7346. Ages 15 & up require a valid Vermont fishing license. They can be acquired online or directly from the Fly Rod Shop. Weather permitting.

It’s a fun way to enjoy Vermont's scenery & taste some of the fine fishing opportunities we have here in the Champlain Valley! Our trips are great for families, novice to expert, young and old alike! Getting out on the “Hardwater” is a tradition that many Vermonter's enjoy each winter, we here at 3rd Alarm Charters have been enjoying the winter splendor for over 30 years! Best Vermont Fishing Spots with Trusted Gear We primarily fish the waters of Addison & Rutland county beginning in Late December, right into late March. Ice conditions can vary greatly from each body of water due to size & elevation. Most bodies of water are as easy drive from the Killington & Okemo areas, but if you’re anywhere from Middlebury to Burlington or the northern ski areas, give us a shout as we can get you out on the Ice! We also offer trips on Lake Champlain, generally from mid-January to early March, in varying locations from the south end, mid lake & the Champlain Islands. We employ both jigging techniques, as well as tip ups, giving our guests the chance to taste a little of everything that each body of water offers. Capt. Matt & his son Logan love teaching customers the knowledge that they have built about Vermont's waters & give you the best shot at putting some fish up on the Ice. Every body of water is a little different in its structure and depths, but we have the tackle to put you in the right location to keep action going! Panfish such as Perch, Bluegill & Crappie can be caught on light tackle, while Bass, Northern Pike, Pickerel and even Trout or Walleye can be caught with live bait on tip ups! We provide all bait & tackle, as well heated ice shelter to keep you out of the wind & cold and a place to warm your fingers or enjoy a cup of hot chocolate! The only thing you need to bring is warm cloths & boots and we provide the rest! Enjoy Vermont’s Winter Hardwater Any one over the age of 15 will need a Vermont Fishing License, which can be purchased online at Vermont Fish and Wildlife! Bring a camera as we strongly encourage C.P.R. (catch, photo & release!). Folks are welcome to take home some fish for dinner, but we do not provide fish cleaning services during the winter. Skiing & Snowmobiling are certainly top sports that draw many to our beautiful state in the winter, but what a way to try something different while in Vermont than on the Hardwater with us at 3rd Alarm Charters! Dog Sled Rides Atii Sled Dogs offers dog sled rides to the general public—but at your own risk of fun and addiction, meaning you will like it so much you'll want to come back for another ride with us. (You won't be the first to do so.) This is a winter sport, dependent on natural snow and cold temperatures. We only give rides when trail and snow conditions are safe for our sled dogs & passengers. Trail conditions may change daily or even hourly due to weather conditions. This means rides are usually 6-10 miles in length, but they may range from 4-12 miles, using a 4-, 6- or 8-dog team, depending upon conditions and other variables. Plan on 2½ to 3 hours for your adventure. This includes harnessing and hitching the team to the sled, the dog sled ride, hot cocoa or hot cider after the dogs are watered and snacked, and time for questions & answers and hugging the dogs. Mushing is a physical activity, sometimes even for a passenger. The dogs are strong, but there are limits to their ability to pull. Passengers may be asked to get out of the sled and walk or even help push the sled, especially if there is a hill. (Consider it part of the mushing experience, if you should be so lucky.) You should be in decent physical condition, able to get in and out of the sled by yourself and, if necessary, walk along the trail. Our job as mushers, even as passengers, is to be part of the team and to make it easier on the dogs. Since we are a small kennel with a limited number of dogs, passengers must weigh a total of about 200 pounds fully dressed in warm winter gear & boots. Young kids over age 3 are welcome to ride with an adult. We ask all guests to be honest with your weight when you send in your reservation form. (We will consider this "sensitive" private information, not to be shared.) Some might consider this an "extreme sport" and you must ride at your own risk. Our dogs are well trained, but anything can happen in this outdoor, winter adventure sport —hopefully nothing eventful—especially if there are loose dogs, deer, turkeys or other critters surprising the team while we’re on the trail. All adults (age 18 & over), or a parent/guardian for those under age 18, will be required to sign a “Liability Waiver & Damage Release” form before any ride. You are welcome to bring and wear a helmet. Your adventure can consist of helping us get the dogs ready to run, or you can just sit on an insulating pad inside the sled bag, snuggled in a fleece blanket and enjoy the scenic ride. (Don’t forget to bring your camera.) Rides are available any day of the week, but as we are a small kennel offering only private tours, rides are limited and must be booked ahead. A lot of people request their rides for the weekend, so weekend availability may be limited. If you are able to, consider a weekday ride. We prefer to run early mornings as it is colder and the dogs love it cold, but since conditions vary daily, contact us as soon as you can to request your preferred date for a ride. Emails are great as we are often away from the telephone doing dog chores, doing a school program, or out on the trail. (If you call or are sending a fax, please do not do so after 8:30 pm. Kennel chores start early in the morning.) Check our Rates page and our FAQ page for additional information.

You should be in decent physical condition, able to get in and out of the sled by yourself and, if necessary, walk along the trail.

Vermont Sled Dog Rides & Adventures Dogsled Tours and Rides with October Siberians This is not just a ride in a dog sled, but an interactive experience of driving the sled. Our sleds are designed for two drivers with the Mushers maintaining full control while the second driver responds and adjusts for the sled to perform properly. The second passenger gets to sit back and enjoy the ride in an enclosed sled bag with blanket. We have the ability and flexibility to provide technical thrilling downhill or a simple ride in the Park. The sled can comfortably accommodate a family of four with two young children. Our tours are located at Little River State Park in Waterbury, "The Recreation Cross Roads of Vermont", near Stowe, Sugarbush (Mad River Valley), Bolton, Burlington and Montpelier. A tour with us will not only be an amazing time in the dog sled, but also a day visiting Vermont's favorite attractions. https://www.octobersiberians.com/ Two Hour Dogsledding Experiences at Little River State Park Many people have visited Vermont State Parks in the summer, but find they have a completely different feel to them in the winter. On this tour, located in the Mount Mansfield State Forest and along the Waterbury Reservoir, you will travel through the State Park campground and dogsled along ancient roads through a former homestead community last occupied 100 years ago. You'll drive past many rock walls, old foundations, cemeteries, orchards and beautiful vistas. The Map below highlight the extensive trail net work available for your tour. The trip is a 4-6 mile (1 hour, 30 minutes on the sled) journey over typical Vermont hill terrain. You'll experience mild to steep climbs and the thrill of the downhill, but rest assured, the Musher maintains full control of the pace of the team and the speed of the sled through this stunning landscape. A portion of the tour is spent within the campground loop system so you can take turns photographing each other driving the team, and also get the front photo of the dogs (not just the sled view). The campground loops also show how a well trained team and leaders can perform. Rates and booking: Start at $383 for two passengers; this rate includes Park entrance fee and 6% sales tax. Additional passenger rates are: • Adults (13 & older) $175.60 • Children (3 to 12) $122.60 • Children under 3 Free Split tours: For large groups the tours can be split to accommodate additional passengers. Split tours consists of sharing time on the sled with passengers switch riders at the start point. Each ride gets about a 2.5 mile jaunt into the campground area, where photos and videos are taken of each other on the sled as we complete short loops around the campground. We typically can accommodate three or four trips with number of passenger on the sled staying with in the 400 lb weight limit. Rates for this tour are $112 per adult and $85.50 per child, with the minimum cost of $448 (four adult rate). These rates include Park entry fees and State 6% sales tax. Longer tours can be arranged when consecutive time slots are booked, see map below for the extensive trail network available.

Sledding

A long-time sledding hill located near Underhill's Central School, this popular winter destination is a great hill for sledding, tubing, toboggans. Casey's Hill is now the property of the town of Underhill with a small parking lot just below the hill. All natural snow with a steep climb and a long way to coast at the bottom; no trees. Locals frequent the hill but all are welcome. Stop at the Underhill Country Store by the stop sign in Underhill Center on the way to the hill for some great sandwiches.

Getting in the Groove of Snow Tubing at Sharp Park in Milton Son of Chute, which more closely resembles an alpine slide than a conventional sledding hill, is more than a quarter-mile long, it has five banked turns and an extended run-out at the bottom. While sliders don't approach luge-like speeds of 90 miles per hour, they occasionally catch air off the bumps, which can spin the tubes around and send sliders sailing down the mountain backward. Snow tubing is essentially river tubing on much colder water. Riders plant their butts in an oversize inner tube, which has a fabric cover, handles, a smooth plastic bottom and a strap for dragging it around. The pastime is a fun, low-cost alternative to skiing, snowboarding and all manner of other downhill sports. However, be prepared to spend time and calories hoofing it uphill. Sharp Park has no lift or rope tow, just the boot prints of previous sliders pointing the way to the top. The hike up isn't long, but it's steep in spots and exhausting, especially after multiple trips, so rest at the top between runs. Unlike most water parks and alpine slides, Sharp Park has no one stationed at the top telling riders when it's safe for them to go. Helmets are mandatory for everyone under 18, but otherwise all sliding is at your own risk. Riders must immediately clear the chute upon reaching the bottom lest they become, as the park rules indicate, "a bowling pin for the next snow tube coming down." Sharp Park also has a conventional sledding hill, albeit one that's as straight and steep at the top as a black diamond ski run. The hill is described "lots of speed — and lots of snow in the face." Son of Chute is still a work in process. Some of the embankments need to be raised more to prevent sliders from flying off the sides and sailing into the woods, which happens on occasion. Sharp Park, 204 Cobble Hill Road, Milton, is open on Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., in February, weather permitting. Parking is $10 per car, but the fee is waived with rental of one tube for $20. Learn more at sharppark.com.
