“Parque das Nações (“Nations Park”) is the newest Lisbon district, created for the Universal Exhibition of 1998 (Expo '98 World Exposition). Highlighting the modern train station (Gare do Oriente) design by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, whose ceiling is an arborescent structure of glass and steel with a great luminosity. The big green spaces areas invite to a bike tour, run or simply a riverside relaxant walk. Along the entire area there are a lot of open spaces that allow you to exercise, meditate, play games and maybe get wet while playing with the interactive pull-outs or visiting the water garden. If you feel tired you can also take a cable car “gondola” ride (aerial lift) and enjoy the amazing view from a height of 30 meters (60 feet). Here you can also find a huge variety of bars and restaurants, a large commercial surface, some entertainment and cultural spaces like Altice Arena, the Oceanario, the Lisbon Casino and the Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Centro Ciência Viva .”

Its north side hosts a triumphal arch and one of the city's legendary cafes, Café Martinho da Arcada, a favourite for writers Fernando Pessoa, Almeida Garrett and Eça de Queiroz. “The monolithic Padrão dos Descobrimentos, looking like a caravel ship frozen in midswell, was inaugurated in 1960 on the 500th anniversary of Henry the Navigator’s death. The 56m-high limestone giant is chock-full of Portuguese bigwigs. At the prow is Henry, while behind him are explorers Vasco da Gama, Diogo Cão, Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan) and 29 other greats. Do take the lift (or puff up 267 steps) to the windswept miradouro for 360-degree views over the river. The mosaic in front of the monument charts the routes of Portuguese mariners.”
