Think Coonawarra, and thoughts of sumptuous reds spring to mind – from the rich rust-coloured Terra Rossa soil for which it’s internationally recognized, to the prized red wines that have made it famous. There are the ruddy cheeks of those who tend the vines; the crimson sunsets that sweep across a vast horizon; and of course, there’s the fiery passion in the veins of our vignerons and winemakers. Almost a million years ago, an ocean teeming with sea-life lapped at the feet of the ancient Kanawinka Escarpment. Then came an ice age, and the great melt that followed led to the creation of the chalky white bedrock which is the foundation of this unique region. But nature had not finished, for with her winds, rain and sand she blanketed the plain with a soil rich in iron, silica and nutrients, to become one of the most renowned terroir soils in the world. Long and narrow, this celebrated ridge of earth, together with pure underground water, cool nights and a long, mild growing season, is Nature’s gift to wine lovers across the globe. This precious parcel of land is some of the most valuable agricultural land in the nation, and recognised as Australia’s premier red wine region, contributing fruit to some of the finest wines in the world. But of course, it took human spirit and ingenuity to bottle it, and like all great appellations, the wines of Coonawarra speak not just of the famous terroir, but also of the local community and people who give those wines their character. It began with the vision of John Riddoch in 1890, and his first plantings of vines; then championed into the next century by the Redmans; and given a renaissance by the Wynns in 1951. These names are still revered, and their vision and heritage is proudly upheld by the world-class wineries which now call Coonawarra home. Today, new generations of old winemaking families toil alongside an influx of fresh talent to ensure the spirit of the Coonawarra wine region continues to thrive. It is a community that’s vibrant, passionate, sophisticated and unique – one that salutes tradition while embracing innovation. At vintage, every picker, cellar-hand and winemaker devotes the same commitment to nurturing each parcel of delicate fruit and crafting them into wines of exceptional distinction that lend themselves perfectly to maturing in the cellar before flowing lusciously from bottle to decanter to glass. Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignons not only taste exceptional when young, but they also cellar brilliantly. The ageability of Coonawarra wines are world class, and it’s what sets our wines apart from others: a fact endorsed by generations of collectors around the world, who have cellared them for up to 60 years. Together, our landscape, our people and our passion work in harmony to create a signature wine region that delivers on a myriad of levels, from the truly magnificent rust-red earth below to the lush, vivid green vines and big blue skies above; the cool Cabernet Sauvignons, Shirazes, Chardonnays and Rieslings have made Coonawarra one of the New World’s greatest appellations. This secluded family accommodation retreat boasts fantastic red gum creek views in spectacular country environment. Enjoy a rural paradise just 3 Km from Naracoorte with spacious living environments, a great kitchen and outdoor living facilities including a peaceful and relaxing view. A place to unwind.
Located on the majestic red gum lined tributary of the Naracoorte Creek, this beautiful elevated property is easy to settle in to from the time you arrive. “Karinya” is the aboriginal name for"peaceful place" and our family home brings justice to its name. A stunning property to relax and unwind from a busy life, and enjoy the serenity of the bird life existing in the surrounding blooming gardens. Naracoorte is located 350km south east of Adelaide. There are plenty of attractions and things to do for all ages and interests. Only 20 minutes from the coonawarra wine region, there are always plenty of wine tours and tastings to attend. For the children, Naracoorte has a beautiful swimming lake located in the town. Of course, the biggest attraction Naracoorte is known for is its spectacular caves - a great attraction for all ages. If you're more on the active side, the Naracoorte Golf Club provides a stunning golf course and a great social environment. Of course if you're an adventurous soul, you would love the wetlands called "Bool Lagoon" - beautiful at sunrise/sunset and refreshing scenery. The township of Naracoorte is a friendly and welcoming community. With three hotels - one newly renovated and modern cuisine 'The Kingcraig Hotel" as well as various festivities such as "Taste Festival" and the Naracoorte races throughout the year, there are plenty of social events. Surrounding towns such as Mount Gambier, Penola, Robe Beach also provide fun things to do such as shopping, swimming, food and wine attractions and four-wheel-driving tracks. The property is perfectly appointed for couples looking for a retreat, older families to enjoy quality time or visiting friends and relatives, or executives seeking a relaxed environment at the end of the day. The house consists of a large open plan lounge/dining/kitchen area. The lounge area is fitted with a large flat screen TV complete with Apple TV for movies and media, an L shaped lounge, a good quality stereo system with outdoor speakers. The large colonial style windows open up to peaceful views of the gardens and creek beds which wrap around the property. Twin colonial doors open out from the living area to the patio which facilitates a quality BBQ and a large square outdoor setting, able to seat up to 12 people. The Kitchen is equipped with an island bench, providing interaction during inspired creative cook-ups with good quality appliances, a dishwasher, a gas hotplate, a fridge, an oven and microwave. Essential herbs, spices and sauces are stocked in the pantry. Sleeping capabilities at Karinya include the option of 5 bedrooms, all located across the southern side of the house, three bedrooms fitted with queen size beds and two bedrooms with two single beds. As the property is rurally located with livestock and dams in the immediate vicinity, Karinya is not set up for kids under 10 unless strictly supervised by parents. Please note, swimming in the dam is not recommended and if ignored, is at own risk. The master bedroom has it’s own ensuite facilities as well as a walk in robe. The main bathroom includes a bath and is shared for the other bedrooms. Verandahs surround the house shading all rooms and a reverse cycle air conditioner heats and cools the main lounge/dining and kitchen areas. All bedrooms contain ceiling fans. The laundry includes a front load washing machine and dryer, ample bench space and sink. Water is supplied by a 10000gallon rainwater tank which is sufficient all year round. However, we ask that guests use water conservatively to ensure the supply is capable of lasting. Cleaning is included in the price, but as with any privately owned premises we ask that the guests leave the place as they found it. Cleaning equipment is provided in the laundry cupboard. The premises are used on other occasions for business and our own private home when staying in the region so we ask that guests treat the place with respect. The combustion fire is available for use during the winter with supplied fire wood. It is very efficient and will heat the whole living room area. The gardens are watered by an automatic watering system daily during the summer months. The controllers are located in the shed which is not accessible. During the summer months the fruit trees will bear, and these consist of an apple tree, plums, nectarines and pomegranates. Guests are welcome to the fruit if it is in season.
Enjoy the serenity of the gardens and creek beds which surround Karinya.
