“Surely "the" museum to visit in Barcelona. For the artist and for the building. Imagine Montcada Street, in the Gothic quarter, five mansions united to form a museum, lovely to visit. About Pablo Ruiz Picasso the museum is essential to understand his formative years. The genius of the young artist is revealed to us through more than 3,500 works that make up this permanent collection.”

“Meier embraced the difficult task of creating a building that would ultimately display a variety of contemporary artworks that were unknown to him at the time of design. The choice to build the museum in the Plaça dels Ángels is consistent with Meier’s vision to situate the building amongst some of Barcelona’s oldest streets and buildings, in addition to revamping the public space of the Raval. After the completion of the $35 million construction, local media referred to the museum as “the pearl” amongst the old architecture and narrow streets just a few blocks from Gothic center of Barcelona. The building’s architectural style has strong references to Modernism. The large (120 by 35 meters) white building has much of its southern elevation glazed, providing the visitor with views across the plaza, and allowing for an abundance of natural light to illuminate the interior galleries. The museum has three main galleries, which can be subdivided, as well as five smaller galleries, one of which is in a tower. Collection The permanent collection of around 5,000 works(up from 1,100 works at the time of the museum's opening in 1995) dates from the mid-20th century onward. There are three periods of modern art represented: the first one covers the forties to the sixties; the second spans the sixties and seventies; the third period is contemporary. The collections focus on post-1945 Catalan and Spanish art, although some International artists are also represented”

“When traveling to Barcelona, you will inevitably come across art works by the artist Joan Miró: when you arrive at the airport, you will be greeted by a huge mosaic of Miró and the city's most representative bank, la Caixa, has a star created by the artist in the logo. Just like Gaudí, Joan Miró was a quintessentially Catalonian artist, and a visit to his museum will give you a more vivid picture of Barcelona’s spirit and style. The foundation Fundació Joan Miró was initiated by the artist Joan Miró himself and the same year, the museum was opened on June 10th in 1975. The artist relinquished the majority of his works to the foundation. Other works are presents from his wife Pilar Juncosa, Joan Prats und Kazumasa Katsutas. Well known skulptures such as the "Couple d’Amoureux aux Jeux de Fleur d’Amandier" (1975) and a large, lavishly designed wall hanging, made particularly for the foundation, are among these works. The museum owns over 10.000 paintings, drawings, sculputes, stage designs and carpets from Joan Miró - the earliest drawings are from 1901. On the roof top terrace you can admire Miró's colourful sculpures together with a wonderful view of Barcelona. The Miró museum enfolds by far the largest collection of Joan Miró's works today. Miró wanted to create an international, interdisciplinary centre, which makes art publicly available. Until today the foundation organizes alternating contemporary exhibitions from the 20th and 21st century, as well as academic research projects and cultural events. Among others we recommend the "Nits de música" (nights of music) with numerous offers of classical music, where international artists perform each Thursday. The centre received the European Museum of the Year Award in 1977. ✨To get there from our apartmets: take metro line L2 (purple) from "Sagrada Família" to "Paral·lel" and walk about 20min (all the trip about 30min). or take metro line L2 (purple) from "Sagrada Família" to "Universitat", then change it to bus num. 55 (all the trip about 40min).”

Emlékmű/látnivaló
“In 1888, Barcelona organized the Universal Exhibition. As a gateway to the fair, located in the Parc de la Ciutadella, was the Arc de Triomphe. A monument of classical form and proportions but with sculptural and decorative finishes, groundbreaking and full of symbolism, which is one of the icons of the city. At the top of Passeig Lluís Companys, the Arc de Triomphe stands out. Gateway to the 1888 Universal Exhibition, the arch presided over the then Sant Joan Hall, the walkway that led to the fairgrounds in Parc de la Ciutadella. The architect Josep Vilaseca conceived a work of classical character and proportions as an allegory of Barcelona's respect for the nations and provinces participating in the Exhibition. As a counterpoint, Vilsaeca chose to clad the monument with exposed work and give it a totally neo-Mudejar air, a fashionable style in the Spain of that time. The combination of the use of the brick with the set of friezes that surround the arch make it a singularly beautiful piece. A detailed look at this portal makes us understand that the Arc de Triomphe was the gateway to the modernity of Barcelona at the end of the 19th century. On the one hand, the frieze facing Paseo de Sant Joan represented Barcelona receiving the nations. On the other hand, we can see how the city gives the awards to the participants of the Exhibition. The side reliefs symbolize Agriculture and Industry on one side and Trade and Art on the other. And above the arch, the coats of arms of the 49 Spanish provinces are presided over by the coat of arms of Barcelona.”
