Elhelyezkedés

Topanga Canyon, Kalifornia, Egyesült Államok

First some random things we like to do in LA with kids:

Ride bikes on the path in Santa Monica - rent them from the shop near the pier and ride them all the way to Venice beach (if you are really ambitious you can go as far as Manhattan Beach)
or, for a more of a canyon work out, rent them from Topanga Creek Bycicles (phone number hidden) and join one of the weekend group rides that start from the shop. Very strenuous, but amazing.
Farmers market on Sundays in Santa Monica on Main St. - super fun, good food, music, people watching
and don't miss our own Farmer's Market on Fridays at the Inn of The Seventh Ray from 9-1
Go to the pool at Annenberg Comminity Beach House (eat breakfast at Back on The Beach, swim, read by the pool, run on the beach) or Calabasas pool if it's cold at the beach, it is sure to be hot in Calabasas!
Griffith Park observatory in Hollywood - short hike or drive right up, cool views of the city
Take a scenic drive on PCH to Neptunes Net for seafood, eat there or take to go and walk to the beach for a picnic, watch the sunset.
LA Zoo - it's all the way in Griffith Park (45 min away), but the zoo is very cool, the elephant exhibit is awesome.
Disneyland - 1.5 hours away, "The Happiest Place on Earth" ;) (I hate it)
Legoland - 2 hours away, great for little kids, the Small Town USA is cool (all the major cities made out of Legos), but an older kid will be bored unless a huge lego fan.
Universal Studios Hollywood - on the lot, has rides (the new Transformers ride)
Take a ferry or a boat to Catalina Island - several cool hotels and restaurants
Santa Barbara Zoo 2 hours away - much smaller than LA, but we like going there for the day, I love Santa Barbara
Laguna Beach Tidepools - go at low tide, amazing

Here is my beaches and hikes breakdown:

Easy and close: Topanga Beach
You can Park on PCH, facing south: turn into American Apparel, then get back on PCH and park along the PCH, walk down.
Great tide pools at low tide, my kids love it, great for boogie boarding between Chart House and the Life Guard House, great surf spot, but rocky, have to be a good surfer.
We usually get fish tacos from Reel Inn or Thai Food at Cholada Beach Cusine (our favorite) right across the street.

Great classic Cali beach with wide breaks and big waves: Will Rogers(Palisades) or Zuma(Malibu). Great long breaks, perfect for boogie boarding can be crowded on weekends.

Best beginner surf spot: Malibu Lagoon, you can even rent a board right there. Food across the way at Malibu Country Mart

Santa Monica beaches are great too, but can be crowded during weekends, we like Annenberg Comunity Beach House, it has great facilities, pool, showers, Back On The Beach Cafe. Parking is $8, pool is about $5 a person.
All Santa Monica beaches have food on the beach at Perry's cafe.

Great secluded beach is at Leo Carillo, it's a bit far (45 minutes), but really nice, pack a picnik or eat at Malibu Seafood or Neptune's Net, bot a great for steamed or fried seafood (will be busy on weekends) .

If you want to go to a restaurant on the beach:
Paradise Cove (Malibu) is our favorite, but its all the way out there, so we make a day of it, you can grab a great beach spot, buy drinks and chill. Save your restaurant receipt, then parking is only 3 dollars (otherwise $20)
Back on the beach Cafe (Santa Monica) we love it for breakfast, we'll park, eat breakfast, take our bikes for a nice long ride on the beach toward Venice beach or go to the pool at Annenberg Community Beach house, or go to the beach right there, waves are nice for surfing or boogie boarding.
Gladstones (at Sunset Blvd), is good for happy hour or brunch
Lobster (Santa Monica) is good for lunch or Happy Hour without kids

Great family hikes in the area:

right from the house:
Trippet Ranch to Santa Yanez Falls (3.5m)
Trippet Ranch to Eagle Rock (2m)
Musch trail to Musch Camp (2m)
Trippet Ranch to Highlands (7m)

Red Rock (2 m away)
easy hike for kids, caves and stone faces to climb)

Back Bone Trail (1 m away)
Great hike all the way up to saddle peak

Tuna Canyon Hike (2m away)
great views of the ocean, cool stone labyrinth at the top

Solstice Canyon (25 min drive)
Cool ruins, watherfall, scrambling on rocks

Summit to Summit (2 m away park on Old Canyon)
cool views of the valley, very easy for kids, can take bikes

Shopping:

3rd St promenade and Santa Monica Mall (best outdoor mall ever, all the high-end brands but also lots of street performers, good restaurants and shops) lunch spots:don't miss the Market (the Curious Palette) on the third level, we also like Sonoma Wine garden for lunch or La Sandia (3rd floor)
Rodeo Dr (have lunch at The Beverly Wilshire on the terrace) the famous Rodeo Dr shopping, I love Planet Blue (also on Montana Ave and in Malibu)
Malibu Country Mart: love Maxfield at Malibu Lumber Yard also Salvation is good for casual surfer stuff (don't miss my favorite gelato shop next door: Grom) Lunch spot: Cafe Habana, I love it. Cafe Marmelade for brunch. Howdy's sucks and is expensive.
Motana Ave: I love that street, that's where my yoga studio is, so I am there a lot. I like LF, which is really fun clothes and they have good sales, but only twice a year. Lots of other cool shops on Montana. Best Coffee in Santa Monica is there too: Caffe Luxx and Primo Passo lunch spots:R&D, Cafe Montana
Abbot Kinney Ave. my favorite shopping street, super cool shops. And it has my favorite restaurants: Lemonade and The Local is great for lunch.
