The Buskirk School House is a unique early 1800s school house converted into a charming, small dwelling located in the upper Hudson Valley in the rural township of Hoosick, Rensselaer County, NY. The school house, which has one large bedroom, includes an open kitchen, dining and living room area as well as a separate den and 2 bathrooms. It is fully furnished with a delightful mix of modern and antique items. It’s peacefully surrounded by agricultural fields.

A hely
The most outstanding feature of the house is its original historic structure featured in the “Common Room”, a high ceilinged, open space that includes the kitchen, living room and dining room.
The School House was originally built prior to 1815, and its hand hewn beams have been painstakingly restored. There is a charming aura of history throughout the house. There is an office/den off of the Common Room as well as a full bathroom with a shower. Stairways lead to the lower level where there’s a spacious bedroom with a queen sized bed, desk, a wall of cabinets and a closet. A sliding door leads to a 2nd full bathroom, one with a combination tub and shower. A washer/dryer is installed in a small room off of the bathroom.
The furniture throughout the house (a mix of modern and antique), the art works and oriental rugs are seamlessly blended together. The kitchen is fully stocked with cooking utensils, dinner ware and an assortment of appliances. The stove is located in a center island. A wide screen, wall hanging TV has been installed in the bedroom with streaming of Netflix and other sites included. High speed internet is provided by Verizon FIOS. There are red oak plank floors in the upstairs rooms, and cherry floors downstairs.
A small blue stone patio allows for enjoyment of the property outside (good for meals outside). Views of farm fields are the prominent vistas from inside and outside the house. The appearance of the School House from the outside belies its spacious interior. From the outside, it looks historic and small, like the one room school house it used to be. On the inside, however, it feels spacious, yet cozy and complete with its the mix of contemporary and historic rooms and furnishings.

I am an artist who settled in Buskirk (northern Rensselaer County) in the early 1970s. I was drawn to this area by the beauty of its historic farmsteads. Over the years I became involved in conserving agricultural land and the rural landscape. I purchased the White Oak Farm in 1993 in order to keep it from being subdivided and developed. It is very near my house, and I was concerned about losing the agricultural vistas. I have put the farm under a conservation easement, which means that its 95 acres of land can never be subdivided and will always be available for agricultural use. Soon after I purchased the farm, I undertook a complete restoration of the house and buildings, concentrating on retaining the historic details.

The entire house and expansive mowed area surrounding the house are included in the rental. There are fields comprising close to 100 acres behind the house which are leased to a local farm family who plant hay and corn. There are pathways in this these fields leading to a magnificent white oak tree and beaver pond.

I purchased the Buskirk School House in 2014 in order to preserve it as it was in total disrepair. Built originally prior to 1815, I felt it was an important structure to save, also because it was near my home. There was a long process of dismantling and reconstructing it. Furnishing and decorating it also took time. I’m pleased and proud to report the completion of the project in late summer of 2020.
The fields surrounding the School House are owned by me and have all been conserved (meaning that they can only be used for agriculture but can never be subdivided and developed).
