Inverness is the capital of the Highlands. On the doorstep you will find world class golf, shooting, walking, climbing, ski-ing, fishing of all sorts, quad biking, mountain biking, canal cruising; there are distilleries galore, fabulous beaches, ancient castles, museums and galleries, theatres and sports centres, not to mention some really great restaurants. SCROLL DOWN for an insider's guide of things to do..

I’ve left some leaflets and local guide books to help give you some pointers/ideas.
The Tourist Information office is in the town centre, beneath the castle. There are literally thousands of things to do in the Highlands, especially if you like outdoor pursuits. Drop me a note if you’d like help with anything – I will almost certainly be able to help, or will know someone who can!
Off the top of my head, some of the things to do would include:

• Hill walking – the nearest Munro, Ben Wyvis, is about 40 mins drive away , but there are hundreds of other walks and plenty guidebooks for these in the house. Some great nearby viewpoints include An Leacainn which is a fit 45min walk up to the top (you get to drive most of the way up!) and Meall Fuar-mhonaidh ,which is a ‘Graham’ and a bit more strenuous, and gives great views of the length of Loch Ness from ‘above’.
• Aviemore – winter sports in season, Glenmore Lodge national outdoor centre; aerial ropeways galore; numerous walks in and around the Cairngorms; funicular railway up to the restaurant near the top of Cairn Gorm mountain (1245m, the 6th highest in the UK)
• Watersports at Loch Morlich, Loch Insh, and Explore Highland in Inverness
• The Wildlife Park near Kingussie – with Polar Bears and Wolves and a Tiger!!
• Or a trip to Landmark, our local funpark. It has all sorts of rides and challenges great for kids of all ages (big water slides) and is about 30 mins drive away.
• Day trip to Ullapool for lunch at one of several brilliant seafood pubs (the boats land about 50 yards away on the pier), with Corrieshalloch Gorge on the way back. Don’t look down!
• Day trip to Torridon to see the west coast and some fabulous mountains – one of the Highland’s best restaurants is not far from here at Applecross and the road down to it is world famous
• Trip down Loch Ness on the Jacobite Express steamer (has a bar). A great way to see the views g&t in hand.
• Numerous castles and museums – the world famous Eilean Donan, Castle Uruqhart, Fort George, Culloden Battlefield (the National Trust has a good website), Cawdor Castle (has a wee golf course), Dunrobin Castle to name but a few
• Inverness has an incredibly vibrant music scene and most pubs will have live music every night. Worth mentioning are Hootananny’s in the city centre, where local musicians gather to play traditional and ceilidh music most nights; to Johnnie Foxes, a famous night-time haunt for something a bit louder; or to Nicky Tams for the Tuesday night Jazz.
• The city boasts a huge variety of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. Further afield I’d recommend The Cawdor Inn in Cawdor (see Cawdor Castle above, combine the two?) or The Dores Inn on the south shore of Loch Ness – good food, good beer and a world class view. And you might see Nessie.
• Or a trip to Bught Park (20 mins walk) which has the ‘Aquadome’ sports centre for swimming, gymn, climbing wall, indoor and outdoor sports, flumes and more! There’s a great park with lots of kids rides, a rowing boat pond, and a miniature railway right next door. The Inverness Floral Hall, a great place to spend an hour or two and for a coffee and cake. A HUGE skate and bike park…..and Crazy Golf! Also in Bught park, there is an Ice Rink and the Highland Rugby Club.
• There’s 10-pin bowling about ten minutes’ walk from the house at RollerBowl. There is snooker and pool here too, and a games arcade and café. There may be some Buy 1 Get 1 Free vouchers for bowling pinned to the kitchen board. Please use them!
• A little bit further on, at Fairways, is a golf range, a go-karting centre and indoor (crown) bowling.
• There are many mountain biking centres in the area, including some world class runs. Look up Abriachan, Laggan Wolftrax, Glenlivet Estate, Learnie Red Rocks etc.
• Or how about something less energetic, with a lunch trip from Aviemore on the Strathspey Steam Railway?
• Or the amazing east coast beaches at Nairn, Dornoch, Culbin
• There are many places for riding, quad biking, shooting, stalking (with gun or camera) and fishing (on or off shore) all within easy reach
• The dolphins at Chanonry Point – turn right through the golf course just after Fortrose, or take a boat trip to get really up close
• Lots of day trip tours from Inverness – search online
• There are cinemas at Eden Court (20min walk) and Vue at the Retail Park (Mall) which is a 10 minute drive away on the Aberdeen road east of the A9. Cinema prices are very reasonable again after huge across the board reductions quite recently.
• Waterfalls….Plodda in Glen Affric, Foyers (great little café at the top), The Fairy Glen, Rogie Falls, Invermoriston Falls, Blackwater Falls. All are easy enough to be taken in on your way to other destinations
• Whisky Trail…! There are distilleries every whichever way you’re heading…and all have visitor centres.
• If all else fails, I’ve left a big selection of movies, board and computer games in the house!
