Mandeville, Manchester Parish, Jamaica

This town is located in the centre of Jamaica. Its transportation centre connects the curious traveller to any point in Jamaica – directly or indirectly. Particularly, it is a gateway to other resorts areas along the South Coast which boasts booming activities in eco and community tourism.
Many of the oldest businesses within the Caribbean were started in this town! The Manchester Golf Club of 1868 was the Caribbean’s first golf course; One of our first hotels in the Caribbean, the Mandeville Hotel, began there in 1875; and the oldest parish library in Jamaica and also the first free library was established in Mandeville in 1938. The first horticultural society in the western hemisphere was also established in Mandeville. It is also a growing education centre. This is evidenced by the presence of the Northern Caribbean University, one of the best universities in the Caribbean.
Many of the original buildings are still visible in the town centre.
The town is mostly built around the Cecil Carlton Park. At the northern end at the park stands the Mandeville Courthouse. Built in 1816, it boasts genuine cut-lime stones and towers up to a two story-double stair cased design. Adjacent to this is the Rectory, which is believed to be the oldest dwelling structure in Mandeville. It was completed in 1820.
The St. Mark’s Church lies to the south side of the square which was also established in 1820. The graveyard of this church is the final resting place of many British soldiers who died of dreadful yellow fever many many years ago.
Attractions
Outside of its scenery and tranquillity, Mandeville is not known for many hot attractions- and don't be surprised, it is more residential. However, they still host quite a few sites that will appease the adventurous.
These include:
Mrs Stephenson’s Garden – one of the most beautiful and well-maintained in Jamaica at 25 New Green Rd. Of course The Garden Nook an AIRBNB Super Host facility literally downtown Mandeville.
The Manchester Country Club – an 18-hole golf course on Brumalia road.
The Jamaican Standard Products Company – offers free tours of coffee fields, reaping, preparing, packaging & tasting. And much more ......

The five things I can't live without include family and friends, the cool hills of Manchester, my wheels, tending my tropical garden, and the peace and tranquillity of my home. My favourite travel destinations in Jamaica, Portland and Negril, Islands of the Eastern Caribbean, in Canada, the Rockies and Ontario; England West Country and London, on the Continent, Paris, Rome, the Rhineland of Germany.

A Motto that has stuck with me for life is "BILL WILL" - it is powerful.

I do not care too much for the movies or TV shows, however, there are a few movie masterpieces like the Sound of Music, South Pacific, the Bridge on the River Kwai, D. Zhivago, The Harder They come the harder they fall (Jimmy Cliff); James Bond Series - particularly Dr. No filmed in Jamaica; the Matrix; Silence of the Lambs; Titanic; Psycho; ET; 2001 Space Oddesy; To Kill a Mockingbird; Breakfast at Tiffanies; Grease and Home Alone.

Regarding TV, I must have my evening dose of International news from the BBC and cable networks like CNN.

My favourite musical selections from Bob Marley and Handel.

Aside from our tasty Jamaican cuisine, I love Chinese, Italian and French foods i truly love to entertain, I am known within the family and amongst friends as a wonderful host. I usually give a great bash for my birthday which is a week before Christmas followed by Christmas Dinner which I usually host on Christmas Eve as there are so many dinners to attend on Christmas day.
