Mit fogunk csinálni?

Starting at Belfast city hall (we meet at the front gates of City Hall in Donegall Square North) and finishing by the Beacon of Hope beside the river Lagan, the tour visits 7 locations in the city centre where major incidents occurred between 1971 and 1976.

We start with a short introduction to Irish / British history and why the Troubles start in the late 1960’s. Over the course of 1.5 miles and 2 hours and 15 minutes we then tell the stories of these incidents; what happened and why, who was involved, and the effect these attacks had on the city and its people, affecting nearly every part of our daily lives.

We also demonstrate the impact of the peace process; you will witness the social and cultural regeneration of the city as we walk through the Cathedral Quarter and waterfront areas of the city where you will also see some of the street art that demonstrates our newfound vibrant culture.

Throughout the tour we use visual aids with images of the Troubles and the places we visit from the 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s to demonstrate the realities of life then compared to now.

The tour is factual and historically accurate to ensure it is unbiased and non-partisan, but we also weave our own stories into the tour to bring our history to life for you.

There is also time built into the tour to ensure that questions are encouraged from guests and that answers are meaningful

We are Mark Wylie, Paul ‘Donzo’ Donnelly and Gabe Nelson, conflict historians with qualifications in Irish History, Politics and Anthropology. We were all born in Belfast in the 1960's, (2 of us in the year the Troubles began!).

We have worked extensively in teaching, mediation work with interface communities and ex-combatants, and Victims & Survivors groups, and of course as tour guides.

We began giving tours to visitors in 2013. We are immensely proud of our city and this is reflected in what we do. Our ‘The History of the Troubles’ tour was Highly Commended at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards in 2019 and is the only ‘peace and reconciliation’ or ‘political history’ tour to receive a 5 star rating by Tourism Northern Ireland. Paul was named 'Top UK Tour Guide' at the Wanderlust World Guide Awards in 2019.

Hol leszünk?

We meet at the front gates of Belfast City Hall in Donegall Square Nor and will visit 7 locations in the heart of the city including the pedestrianised central shopping area, the Cathedral Quarter, home to some of our best and worst bars, restaurants and street art, and then finish by the Beacon of Hope on the banks of the river Lagan, with views across to the Castlereagh Hills and the iconic cranes in Harland & Wolff.

Great walking tour by a guide who was very knowledgeable, interested and fair. Gave a good insight into the troubles by visiting locations and telling stories of what happened there and the individuals concerned. It was well worth the 2 hours despite the heavy rain!

The tour was great. The stories were personal and really helped us to understand Belfast as a community. Paul took us through areas we never would have found on our own and we decided to retrace our steps to explore some places more. He even stayed after the tour to answer our questions and direct us to make the most of our only day in the city.

Mark lived through the Troubles, and has a first-hand perspective. He took us to many places that have been rebuilt or remodeled, and showed us photos and told us what happened there. No way I could have learned these important details on my own.

Mark was a fantastic and knowledgeable guide. He was able to bring both levity and gravitas to this serious topic and truly engaged the group. I would say that the best and most unique aspect of this tour was that they consciously approach the topic from a neutral stance. When approaching such a divisive and polarizing subject, it is easy to take a sensationalist approach or to be overly partisan. Mark was able to offer an astounding amount of incredibly educational, historical context without leaning to one side or the other of the conflict. If you are looking to get a real look into the Troubles that highlights the struggles suffered by BOTH sides without imbalanced judgement, this is definitely the tour for you.
