On arriving at Mayfield Cottage we shall start (in the only appropriate way) with refreshments, tea, fresh coffee and pastries and an introduction to apiculture. We shall explore bee types and characteristics, pollination and reproduction.
It is important (and responsible) that matters which threaten polllinators are discussed and the steps necessary to protect the health and habitat of pollinators (it’s not too boring!).
We shall examine the components and function of the beehive. We shall look at a beehive (and differing hives) and their benefits and shortcomings to a novice. Depending on whats happening in the apriary an observation hive may be set up enabling the close examination of live bees without the limitations of a beesuit and veil.
Once we have familiarised ourselves with the first principles of the honeybee and it’s home we shall don our suits and gloves and make our way into the apriary. We shall take time to ensure we are carefully zipped up! We keep good natured bees, mostly of Buckfast strain.
We shall explore the products of the hive, honey, bees wax, propolis, pollen and all matters as to happy harvesting!
And then we shall have another well earned cuppa!
