Mit fogunk csinálni?
We jump into it at the iconic Jack Kerouac alley where the bohemian bar Vesuvio meets the world-famous City Lights bookstore. I tell the story of how poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti opened the store in 1953 and soon thereafter was embattled in a trial that changed the face of publishing.
Then we walk down Broadway where we'll get free entrance to the Beat Museum ($8 value) where my friend and museum curator, Jerry Cimino helps me with amazing stories of Beat writers, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and a few others. A walk down Broadway includes stops at some locations where the Beats and Jazz musicians roamed and performed in the 50s and 60s. Then onto Montgomery Street where I read a passage of the poem, Howl.
Then we travel back in time to old San Francisco on Montgomery where Mark Twain worked at the literary journal, Golden Era. I explain how the gold rush lured writers here including the irascible Ambrose “bitter” Bierce. Then to the site of the old Black Cat cafe where writers like John Steinbeck, William Saroyan, and Truman Capote hung their hats. I have pictures of all these writers and tell interesting stories about their relationships with San Francisco. Then into Chinatown where we stop at an old writer's bar called Li Po. Then down Kerouac ally.

Steve is one of the integral part of the SF literary culture. You can learn a lot about SF from this tour whether you are a local or a tourist. He knows lot of people in the scene. Enjoyed it. It ended at 245 pm instead of 4 pm as listed. Maybe coz I was the only one on the tour.

What a treat to walk around North Beach with Scott! The stories he told were sometimes personal, sometimes just historic, but always a delight! They opened a view to the city we had never experienced. We especially loved some of the supporting players (yes, he knows people) and seeing Sputnik at the Beatnik museum! Never know the connection. So cool! Go on this tour!
